Match Thread/No Wyke or Watmore

he's generally won the ball back without going to ground and found space before that 'easy uncontested sideways' ball. He wouldn't be in league one if he could win the ball back, get away from any of the opposition, drive forward 40 yards and create a chance by himself. If he had someone to give the ball to who could then complete the move by driving forward and creating something then we'd see the effectiveness of McGeouch.

Funny how the man who signed him had little faith in him last season then.

What.....giving it to a defender who he knows invariably punts it forward and loses possession?

that very rarely happens. Most of our play goes through the full back/winger which is great until you remember that your striker isn't interested unless the ball falls to him.

I think it was a fitness issue last season.

wins the ball and keeps it moving. That's his job. Unfortunately once he's shifted it the next player on the ball does the same

Do you really need McGeough playing that deep to pick up the ball when you're playing 3-5-2/3-4-3. The defenders should be able to step out to the half way line and pass it into midfield or there's no point.

Not McGeoughs fault that it's what he's been asked to do. It won't work though because we end up looking really isolated

A very even game, they were better with the ball but didnt really cause us much problems with it and they won due to a wonder strike...... we look better defensively but still making the wrong choices up front. Hopefully the fact that we only scored against south shields in pre season forces our hand a bit.

Hate to say it, but he's a proper loss.

Massive catts fan but if he had stayed we would have to play him and just don’t see where he fits if we are wanting to build a side with more energy/pace etc. Biggest issue for me in central mid last year was 3 identical midfielders, none had much pace and while decent footballers struggled to last 90 mins. One of the reasons we kept giving leads away?

Don’t see him winning that much ball tbh. When he does get it he’s looking to play it backwards and sideways every time. Slows the tempo right down making it difficult for the player he gives it to, usually in a five yard radius. This is league 1, teams are coming to the SOL and sitting back for a draw. We shouldn’t need a midfielder who is glued to a spot five yards in front of the back four. Too slow, too predictable, shouldn’t be anywhere near the team.

he wins it back all the time man. If we played with 3 midfielders who only operate on the edge of the opposition area we'd be fucked.

McGeouch does his job.

Which is his job.

Not really. If he was stand out defensive midfielder or intercepting nearly everything, if he was dictating play through it and controlling the game - fair enough. If he's just reasonable at reading the game and mainly just making short passes to centre halves and full backs and takes no responsibility to get forward himself or play the ball to those who make runs he's a waste of a shirt.

He was excellent last pre season until he got injured in that Middlesbrough game

Hmmmm… that was... average.

First glimpse of Dobson was encouraging - 'Leadboots' seems to have a replacement. Willis looked sound. But Grigg contributes little, McGeouch is too safe and overall we continue to be slow and ponderous - repeatedly trying to get forward with long 'Hollywood' balls which just give away possession cheaply.

I want to see Dobson and O'Nien starting, to give us some drive, Watmore for pace and directness, and far fewer punts and more passes.

the defenders can step out and play but they can't be breaking up play in the midfield as well. Every team needs a player who can win it and keep it simple.

We'll see when the season kicks off. It was too one-dimensional what he done last season, if it's the same this and he offers nothing forward then he needs to improve in a few aspects of his play in terms of being a bit more clever or more physical in terms of stopping runs and intercepting.

If u are going to play a team full of those kind of players u still need that midfielder like Mcgeouch who will sit, tidy up, do the easy stuff and give the ball simple so your attacking mids can break. All good teams have that player

He’s part of a central midfield that’s also responsible for creating attacking moves. Did not see him create anything today, all I saw was him and Leadbitter sitting in front of the back four knocking five yard balls sideways and backwards. Not good enough.
