Jonny Bairstow

Totally agree. We can't rely on his batting as he has an exploitable weakness like Vince or Ballance.

I would still pick him as a wicket keeper batting 7 like.

given his reaction to losing the gloves and his reaction during the WC he’s also a bit of a tart.
 Times when you wish Johnson wasn't banned

I'd be happy with Buttler or Foakes taking the gloves and batting 7, if we had a solid number 5 to replace Bairstow. At the moment, I'm not sure that we do but a continuation of poor form from Bairstow could see us having to make that call

It won't, though. He's the golden boy of English cricket, and throws a wob any time he gets a modicum of criticism.

Aye it’s seen his ‘bowled’ percentage drop below 30. Surely that will stop all talk of him being dropped ;)
Absolutely. Fucks up his average at number 6 mind

Since start of 2018 he has faced 68 balls from pace bowlers that would have hit the stumps

36 runs
8 dismissals

Bowl straight and he’s fucked

Look at this statistic.

Absolutely remarkable. He's been sussed. And when your sussed at this level, you need to rework your technique - and that must happen at county level.

Bring Foakes in.

Buttler at five, Foakes at seven - done. Rest of team stays the same.

Is Foakes over his injury?

You would think those ODI and IPL bowlers would cotton on! He had a really poor series against India and there’s no doubt how the majority of dismissals came. That said he will play next week and throughout the Ashes series. It could be a defining series for him but I think he has the quality to have a good series. He isn’t the first quality player to have a poor run and won’t be the last. I think he’s a bit of a twat and people are being harsher in their assessment because of that

ODI cricket is very different mind.

I agree on your last point.

Fair post. I think he's better than what he's currently showing in test cricket but this isn't a new flaw. Certainly think his prickly personality wins him no fans.

It is in many regards but if you are opening up to the likes of Bumrah, Archer etc with a new ball you won’t get very far if you can’t play a straight ball. The stats you put up including the last Ashes up to before this match. Be interesting to compare them to Stokes over the same period

Nah don’t agree with that. Even the very best we have ever had showed technical flaws and had poor runs if form. Gower nicking off, Cook and Gooch falling over and planting their front foot for LBW. Of course Bairstiw isn’t in their class but he easily amongst our best current players. Stokes got less runs last summer than Bairstow averaging 25. Is he a point of discussion?

Stokes is at least good at his other discipline. Bairstow is a shoddy at best keeper.

Stokes hasn’t had 3 bad years in a row mind

Don't know...

It's a judgement call isn't it. Technical weaknesses are one thing, but when does a weakness become a serious flaw. It did with Ballance and has done with Bairstow before. Cook and Trescothick, on the other hand, are two players who had weaknesses but adapted.

Bairstows numbers have not been great recently. Even worse in England alone (his big knock on Sri Lanka is really helping his short-run average).

He was, but then played himself back into form with some important contributions in the winter.

Apart from averaging 44 in 2017? With 2 hundreds and 4 fifties in 7 tests? Apart from that?
