Oviedo but

Cattermole was our best CM by a mile though and if Oviedo is persuaded to leave that's 3 LB's down to one....who isn't that good as things stand.
I think Gooch will get a lot of minutes as left wing-back; I don't think left back is our weak point.

Would you move from a very lucrative contract just to save a few quid for your multi-million quid worth employer?

He’s got no loyalty to us, so why should he?

I’ll remember him as a decent footballer, who always gave 100 % and was professional when many round him weren’t.

I do expect him to leave this summer mind.
Said similar about Rodwell and Catts The club gave them hideous contracts. I’d say the club was daft for giving some of these contracts out.

We’ll have to disagree. The money saved by getting him off the books could totally rebuild the team. He knows the position the club is in, has made a packet and should be willing to sit down and sort a move out. People saying any monies saved would not be spent on team rebuilding are just speculating.
He was unavailable for a long period last season wasn’t he? Funny how that happened after his proposed move to WBA fell through.
Yes I get it we offered him the contract it’s our fault but getting him off the books would imo make a massive difference to our first team line up.
Honestly don’t think the club have even tried to come to a compromise on his contract. SD has said more than once he’s happy for him to stay.

None of this really sounds like a well thought out strategy to me though. What it does look like is a sort of Heath Robinson affair concocted on the hoof to cover up the lack of any real plan this season.

He's not bleeding us dry, he signed while in the Premier on premier wages, would you leave a well payed job?.
I wouldn't.

This.

Absolutely pathetic to expect a man to walk away from his job and in to uncertainty, just because a few internet forum bashers don’t like him.
He’s by no means been the worst or most gutless player we’ve had in recent times, doesn’t deserve the shit he gets, he’s hardly a leech.

Habitually, we tend to equate high wages with low effort (who can blame us in the wake of N'Dong and Dodgybugger?). But Oviedo is a different case. We can't afford him, but he has always applied himself well to playing for Sunderland.

The fact is if they got rid of him today that money wouldn’t be used to reinvest in the starting XI. Where has the money saved from Cattermoles wages been spent?

Totally agree mate.

He joins the long list of ridiculously expensive flops to drain the club. If he had anything about him he'd be chewing his agents ear off for a move away but no, just plod on earning a fortune whilst doing the bare minimum.

Donald said multiple times we could afford to keep if he's contributing.

Not bleeding us dry at all. Just means the owners may have to put their hand in the pocket to actually fund us...

The Oviedo wages won't be reinvested, the Cattermole wages haven't been reinvested. Not my issue as a fan if the owner has to actually put his hand in his pocket. As a fan id rather watch a better footballer & seeing how he wont be released I want to stay. Couldn't give a fuck about wages. His wage will be off the book next year anyways and we're okay for this year. Donald already said we're in a good state this year. What's the big rush to get rid? If he had 2 year left I'd say fair enough but in the last 12 month now.

Disagree, with the support and commercial size of SAFC we should be a financially viable business. There should be no need for sugar daddy funding and as a club we should never put ourselves in hock to one individual or group of individuals ever again.....The future of football is the Ajax model imho. We have the stadium, we have the training facilities and any money we do invest should be into creating a truly world class academy and scouting network. The Scouting should be focused on our academy as much as first team and how we bring those youngsters through into the first team.

Look at the record of Ajax, its stunning and all about home grown talent and selling on players they nurture being sold on to make the club profitable. They have a tiny amount of debt and that is before they trouser 100s of millions of £££ this summer as they sell on some of last seasons dream team.

We literally can't, it was explained in the paper the other day that we can only spend 60% of turnover on player wages. Get rid of Catts and that gives us a little wiggle room but not much.....This will get even worse next season when the final parachute payment has gone......This is the reason behind the one out one in and its the reason that we cannot instantly go out and sign players up to the value of Catts wages.

Can't help thinking it is not a bad thing as it means no matter how much fans pressure the owners to get the club into the shit financially again, they cannot do it.

Agree to an extent but Ajax are able to get the best young players in the country though. Ours are hoovered up by the big sides.

Can't have a go at him for not just tearing up a 35k a week contract man ffs.

I'm sure you'd do it if you were at say a random team in France or Italy.

Hence the scouting network being a priority.......It takes time but it is the way forward, teams like Sunderland will never ever compete with the biggest teams in terms of financial muscle so need to make sure they are the best of the rest with an alternative viable model........We can never go back to a position where we lose money on every signings for years on end.

They've all been flops.....wa stinking out League Wan....

Yeah agree but at the same time the likes of City, Liverpool, United, Arsenal, Chelsea all taking the best young players & paying them good money. We'd need to be able to do this to compete. Look at the boys we've lost to Liverpool & Arsenal recently too even though they were in our academy.

No we are not, we finished 5th having been 2nd with a few weeks to go, at times we played some superb football and we had the best player in the league......We made cup final and play off final which we lost at the death......Stinking the league out? Have a word with yourself man.

They do but there is a next raft of players and quality scouting will find them.....Its why Southampton have consistently produced cracking players from their academy. Also think its important that they academy gets a reputation for being able to progress players through to big careers. It takes time, effort and focus but we have largely wasted the last decade buying players who are no better than our academy players for shed loads of money.......£14 million for Ndong, £8 million for Pappy...Might as well have blooded our best kids.

He nearly went at Christmas, on loan, but didn’t the club fuck the paper work up! And I’m sure I’ve read some links to foreign clubs. I’d expect him to move this season, can’t imagine the club would take the piss on the fee as to just get him off the books.
