Blame wilki.

however if you want to delve deeper then Grigg has played a helluva lot less minutes. He's a better player even though he's still got his faults.
He did, but he played fewer minutes because he was shite. We spent upwards of 3m pounds on Grigg in January, and within a few months he was benched in favour of a 500k pound, returning from injury, half-fit lump from Bradford, who also isn't very good.

It isn't a stunning endorsement of Grigg's contribution.

The style of football didn't help, but at least Wyke gave us something to play off. He actually tried for a start, and he at least held it up. Grigg gave us nothing - he's too slow to run the channels or in behind, and has no physical presence to retain the ball played into him. Like I said though, the football was garbage so we might as well lump it at a lump, than lump it at Grigg.

You're saying Grigg played fewer minutes as he was shite, but then Wyke played more and he was equally as shite mostly - how on earth does that work? He generally played more as he was here longer. Towards the end Wyke grafted a bit and because of a chronic lack of support for both his physicality meant he gave defenders in one or two games a physical edge, but wasn't really effective anyway. Early on Grigg actually looked decent with movement, touch etc, but lacking in a bit of strength and pace, but few misses and the price tag along with a lack of fitness seemed to really affect him. Wyke had an injury which also played a part, but despite coming back in and gradually getting fitter he showed a shocking lack of technique and the one area you thought he'd be decent in (in the air) he looked f***ing hopeless.

First season both weren't good enough. but looking at each equally as strikers without judging simply on price tag only the foolish would suggest Wyke will do better than Grigg over the longer term, even if that's simply because Grigg has a little bit of ability.

Wyke was injured for virtually the entire time he was here pre-Grigg, so the last part is irrelevant. When Wyke was playing every week in the back end of the season, while Grigg sat on the bench, I'm pretty sure the reason for that had nothing to do with 'Wyke has been here longer'...

Wyke is fairly shite. He's a middle of the road, League 1 clogger. The fact he (deservedly) was selected ahead of a 3m pound new signing, is an indictment of the garbage performances of said signing. We didn't exactly create loads for either striker, but when we did, they both missed most of the them - both of then missed some absolute sitters. Grigg went round the keeper and missed an open goal in one game!

Nobody anticipated Grigg being as shit as he has been, and Wyke probably played a lot more than anticipated in the second of half of the season because of this.

He wasn't, he'd played 11 games before Grigg turned up. He played something like 24 overall. He was here and fit for more than 11 games too, Maja had largely kept him benched when he was available, or have you forgot about that too?

You're also only talking about six games when Grigg was benched and Wyke started at the back end of the season. Grigg was suffering a chronic lack of form, maybe fitness too.

Not irrelevant at all.

He was selected as Grigg was out of form too and as a more physical player in a side which hadn't really supported any striker last season he was seen as being a better option in terms of running and chasing.

Grigg did do that, but then Wyke must have scuffed about 4 or 5 clear chances in the box to the point it became laughable and misplaced at least three clear headers on goal I recall, two in one game. what this shows is that this is another argument where price tag absolutely blinds peoples judgement because they recall the Grigg one, but the Wyke ones become whats expected.

Grigg was injured. Couldn't give a toss about what Donald said on the podcast. He was protecting the manager. The NI manager insisted he was injured anarl.

Wyke was poor last season. He honestly can't finish, he side foots everything and half the time it rolls off his shin. That miss against Burton when the keeper was on the floor ffs.

You can get away with it if your holdup play is really good & you're a different option but Wyke isn't that. He's just tall & physically, doesn't possess the attributes of a good hold up striker.

I don't know whether Grigg was injured long term or not, but it was mentioned earlier on Roker Report how they were nursing him through as he couldn't train because of injury. The bloke clearly was lacking sharpness as he became less and less effective and it was a bit bewildering when Donald said he was fit. Maybe it was to deflect criticism after signing two injured strikers - I'm not sure, but like you say Grigg did pull out of the NI squad for the Euro qualifiers in late March with an ankle injury and he came with an ankle injury so it suggests it maybe never really was given the chance to clear up.

I like Charlie Wyke for his effort and the way the fans got behind him and he sort of turned it around, but he is really poor. Technically and composure wise I can't off the top of my head remember a worse striker at SAFC. Like you say it's not even as if he's a good target man who uses his body well and brings others into play, I can't fault him for effort but I fear we'll struggle to do as well as expected if he's a regular this season.

Yeah I like Wyke & want him to succeed here. Just as you say his attributes are along way off how they should be. It's hard to look at it and say 'yeah they'll be a success next year' when there's nothing to suggest otherwise. He'll give us 6/10 minimum each week but we should be striving for more when we are looking at going up. We've got to look past effort & look at quality.

I like Clarke-Harris at Bristol, he scores a lot of different types of goals & like to see him in here working with Grigg.

When big Chas bags about 10 against the sandies in a pre season kick around people will change their minds

Fookin gerrin man,the King will chip in with about 20 as well
Wait till Finsbury gets cracking, man. He'll unearth wizards & shamen from Amazonian tribes whee'll voodoo & juju the opposition to oblivion. Crazed blowpipe merchants playing in flipflops whee'll score a thousand goals a season. Each.

Love a bit of voodoo like.
Going to be a great season man
Ivry season is a great season, brother.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

A time to be promoted, and a time to stay put.

What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?

Not sure it’ll help Wyke a great deal but failing to get crosses in early definitely was a problem for us. Gooch seemed to want to beat his man 8 times before crossing to nobody or hitting the first man. McGeady has better delivery but too often was crossing to marked players because he’d fucked around with it.

I don't doubt that our crossing was/is poor. But from what we saw last season last, getting crosses in early won't be much help as Wyke will be nowhere near them. Which is a surprise because I thought that's what he would be good at, and it's what he should be good at.

I think sometimes people just decide that because Wyke is big and a target man, he'll automatically benefit from early crosses into the box. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that, and not all big target men are the same.

Exactly,early crossing might help but he is 6ft 1 and jumps to 4ft 8 so doubtful .A few also think changing tactics would enable us to avail ourselves of griggs attributes .Lets look at them,is he fast no,good in the air no,does he take people on no ,does press defenders no,get stuck in no.Icould go on but please someone what attributes are we trying to uncover .Yes I know he has scored lots of goals at this level in years gone by,its now im worried about .

I wouldn't say he's scored lots of goals.

"Gets into good positions" apparently according to the blind faith brigade.

Got into the box one game and everyone was rejoicing :D

He's just absolutely f***ing shit.

There's no sugar coating it.

Indeed. When did he get into these good positions exactly? Or is it just something people say because it's possibly what you'd expect from a target man?

He did get in to some good positions. Might have been better for him if he hadn't because he bolloxed pretty much all of them and a few were real sitters. I suppose, being optimistic, that means small improvements might yield big gains but he just doesn't seem very good! I still wouldn't be surprised if he got 12-15 goals though over a full season.

It would surprise me,ive said this a few times but to repeat if grigg and wykeare our strikers going forward,then we can stop and relax cos we are not going up

First season both weren't good enough. but looking at each equally as strikers without judging simply on price tag only the foolish would suggest Wyke will do better than Grigg over the longer term, even if that's simply because Grigg has a little bit of ability.
And I would suggest that anyone backing Grigg to come good is showing blind faith, he was gash last season , for what reason I know not, but for us to have made major investment in his ability to score goals going off last season it was money thrown to the wind.
