Some great prospects under Durban, and made SAFC a difficult team to beat, though most did at the time, if that makes sense? Think the horse had bolted when he took over like and wouldn't count his tenure a missed opportunity, very similar to McColls time in charge IMO.

He had a young ish team. He brought in Paul Bracewell who in this spell was one of the best midfielders I have seen play for us. There were grounds for hope at that time.

One of the biggest mistakes made was sacking Arthur Cox. He could have taken over from Bob Stokoe when he resigned in 76. We then would not have had to suffer the Adamson clan.

As its fantasy thread happy to join in.

1 Not signing Pele before he played in world cup at 17 years of age. Would never have been relegated in 1958

2 Not being so shit after 1958 that no decent player or manager would want to join club. Meaning 7th place is highest in over 60 years

3 Not hiring Lawrie Mac

4 Not hiring Moysey

5 Not hounding out every manager who kept you in Premier. Meaning Third Division football for at least 2 years

Though 1 apart its not really fantasy but bare faced reality

I don’t remember any Aldridge links under Durban. Ashurst had took him from Ashurst brothers Scouse league team to Newport then tried to buy him for us but Cowie wouldn’t go an extra £5k is what I remember.

Nice one.

I must admit, I thought it was Ashurst who tried to sign him, as he knew him from his Newport days, but I'm not 100% confident about that.

I'd definitely disagree that the squad that Durban inherited was bloated though.

Good read.

Not getting Mr Clough is the big regret. He won the European cup with Notts Forrest. What could he achieved with us.

I've always said wedve been his Brighton or dirty Leeds

Cowie would've sacked him after 33 days not 44

Nice one.

Only time I've agreed with cowie on the Aldridge transfer

Everything had been agreed for Aldridge to come to us then Oxford bid another 5k more

Cowie told them to get stuffed
