Roker Rapport Podcast: With Stewart Donald (Tues 28th May)

I understand that it's only a year on but if I was buying a football I'd have a ethos and philosophy on how to run the football department. I would look at how clubs in Germany and Holland do things on small budgets. The first thing I'd do would be look for a Sporting Director who fits the bill and has the same vision. I'd let him run the football department and the responsibility of carrying out the task I want for the football club.

Unfortunately we brought in people like Richard Hill who is a buddy and a hero to Donald and Methven. Hill brought in Coton who is a dinosaur. And we brought in Paul Reid who is ex-Eastleigh. We seem to be going down a real old fashion British route of a football club rather than a more progressive European route which most clubs are doing.

Donald turn Eastleigh into a Football League everywhere but on the pitch. At the end of the day result on the field is all that matters.
It’s not. If the background stuff isn’t right there is no football club. No sentiment in anything nowadays. You have to financially viable.

I'm dredging this from memory, but I think they were either introduced by Ellis during Bruce or at the time MoN became boss.
The earliest memory I have was of Stewart Houston (?), the derided basketball laptop nerd in the congerton era. I have no idea if our execution of it was any good whatsoever but history has shown that it was clearly the right thought process. In so many ways the adoption of analytics in basketball is foreshadowing the revolution in football. The best minds from the two worlds are working closely these days.

What annoyed me was him saying he could have done more on Maja when on Twitter he couldn’t wait to say how he’d basically bent over backwards to accommodate them and that it was Maja and his agent who were acting up. It’s especially galling when Ross says that Maja had told him personally he wanted to stay so I don’t think it would have taken too much effort to keep him.

Give over man he's said he's speaking in hindsight. He likely means given he spent 3m and wages plus signing fee on Grigg, that with hindsight he could have chucked some more at Maja and maybe that would have tempted him.

they done everything at the time to accommodate Maja. He even said if Maja wasn't happy with the terms of the release fee etc if we weren't promoted that they would sort something out, but at that point they just wouldn't speak to him.

Maja told everyone he wanted to stay, before not signing the contract he'd asked for. It's not f***ing hard to work out what was on his agenda given his contract was running down and it took less time for him to sign for Bordeaux than negotiations had here.

Aye hindsight. That’s why he was banging on on Twitter about the nasty horrible agent instead of meeting his demands.

Oh wait, he claimed he’d met Maja’s demands. Never mind.

If it wasn’t so hard to work out his agenda then why did the club waste so much time before getting a replacement in? That must be hindsight as well.

Jack Rodwell?

Was that the ex insurance guy? He was the first I can remember introducing it into Sunderland

They met his demands, as soon as they met his demands the agent and Maja stopped speaking to them - they'd been stringing us along.

I don't think you've been following it...

they realised what was going on when they met his demands, Maja didn't sign and then contact was stopped. After giving them a weeks deadline and running out of all other avenues, they went public with another deadline to flush them out.

The authors were clear the driver was the owner and / board, they weren't brought in by the manager - whoever it was at the time.
Really intrigued by that now.

For what it is worth and this pure speculation on my part, is that it was introduced during the O'Neil era, around Feb time when De Fanti was first mentioned rather than before. Always felt that at the time O'Neil felt undermined by the introduction of De Fanti and possibly now this analytics. Could imagine Di Canio being a fan of analytics as well

Been doing a bit of digging on this site,

@The Cabbage it was Steve Houston, not stewart.

Also at @Zak's Dad is the book called 'The numbers game' as per this thread Lee Congerton and Steve Houston's Focus On Analytics

Don’t know how anyone could listen to that and still be slagging them off. If we continue the progress we’ve made over the last 12 months we’ll be sitting pretty this time next year.
What I got was that SD is ready to let someone else invest this would mean he will not be the majority shareholder

f***ing hell they know how to polish a turd through talking. Not sure how relevant most of it was though, as I said on another thread players go to shit after coming here.,

I'm not really picking that up mind. Both saying they expect to win the league and want to win the checkatrade trophy as well. They are saying they have the resources/finances to get us there.

All very uplifting actually and Methven clearly agreeing with Donald.

Agree. Charlie very much there to support and step in when Stewart gets carried away, for example making sure he isn’t too critical of employees in public.

Absolutely brilliant podcast, good questions, great answers (where appropriate) well balanced, interesting and insightful.

My thoughts exactly- I would recommend it to all our fans; might make you feel a bit better about Sunday - it did for me.
I know Charlie has come in for some stick about comments elsewhere but he was very good on this.
