Charlie Methven on metro radio

Give us something on the pitch to shout about and he’ll be saying we’re too noisy !!

we’ve watched negative ,nervy , cling on to what we’ve got football nearly all season !

Would he have been happier if we had an average home attendance of 12-14K each week but sold 38K for the playoff final ????

The fact there are people defending him on here as well

How many people are putting the boot in have heard what he said. 40 mins into the Podcast today and Charlie coming across alright.

He did the podcast before the radio interview.

But he didn't say it quite like that did he. Our PR genius had a go at the fans!

Again.

Can you imagine the reaction on here if Ashley slagged off Newcastle fans, yet because we’re the ones with a shareholder and director slagging us off repeatedly, people can’t wait to say how brilliant it is. Ridiculous.

Let's face facts the standard of football that SAFC fans have had to endure over the past few months has been bloody awful. The Clubs League position does not lie - fifth best in League One.The number of drawn games that folk have has to sit through I think might be unprecedented in the Clubs history and actually tells it's own story as to why SAFC fans might be a little more subdued than usual. On the whole the fans haven't been given much to shout about although they have tried as the team's performances have been dull dull dull.

SAFC lost the play-off final because the team was uninspired and was even unable to take advantage of how shell shocked Charlton were after they conceded a howler of an own goal in the first four minutes. Mr Methven might think that buying the supporters a drum is the answer well I can tell him that a few decent players who are used effectively would help.

Does not sound like a top PR man, more like a foot in mouth type of guy. That attendance dig is exactly that, having a go back for the criticism the pair of them have been receiving in this last 3 month. Third rate club ran by third rate PR man, What a WALLY.

Disgraceful.

Presumably this crossed with the RR podcast as he should have been pulled up on it.

Mind you I did agree with him during the podcast when he called an end to the pointless questioning to the owner about Will Grigg and is being too deep.

Jesus. This thread

The owners do a 2hr podcast, in which they are open about every aspect of the club, yet a 2 minute interview - taken after the defeat - is the main talking point .

As a SC holder, I wasn’t offended - nor I imagine were the vast majority of our support. Yes. It was a bit silly, but we need to stop being so precious.

I also suspect a few are still sore from Sunday and taking things overly personal.

How was it a good interview you knacker? Our fans weren’t louder than theirs? Our own director has used that as a mitigating factor as to why we didn’t win the match. Completely ignoring the utter disgrace that took place on the pitch and sideline.

It’s absolutely obvious it’s diversionary tactics - but it’s a massive own goal and he can go and fuck himself, the idiot

“Charlton have been in the Premier League for much of the last 20, 30 years and they had 40,000 fans to our 34,000'

The first part is absolute bollocks. Charlton have spent 8 seasons in the top flight since 1990. We've had more than twice as many seasons in the top flight, in the same period. We've just spent 10 years in a row in the PL, only 2 years ago! Charlton haven't kicked a ball in the PL in 12 years man, and they've spent half of them in League 1!

The 2nd part is true, but trivial. Yes, they had a few thousand more fans than us. Why? Well, we've just taken 40k Wembley 2 months ago, and if you haven't noticed, we live 260+ miles away. Charlton, on the other hand, haven't just been to Wembley, and live right round the f***ing corner and could get to Wembley quicker than I can get to the SOL! And I live in the North East... they're also the form team in the league, whereas we've barely won a game in months, already lost at Wembley this season and haven't won at Wembley since the Jacobite Rebellion.

As for the whole 'made more noise' element. That's probably true, but it works against his argument that Charlton are a bigger club. Charlton were very enthusiastic, and had a pitch invasion just for getting to the final. Sunderland are ashamed of themselves for even being in this league, and went into the playoffs in a bad atmosphere from not going up automatically. It was a failure for Sunderland to even need to be in the playoffs. If you want your fans to generate noise, I also find that attempting to win the match helps. Starting a playoff final with no wingers, 1 isolated lump for a CF and playing 78 holding midfielders doesn't exactly help.
Great post.
Agree with all of the above.

I've said he was stupid to bring up the numbers on Sunday, but he was right about the noise. A poster I've been 'discussing' this with on here has already agreed that Charlton were louder, but that didn't suit his dislike of the tory ****.
Don't need to resort to personal stuff re him , up to now thought he was good for the club( which is the main issue).
I just hope it's not the beginning of him having pops at a fanbase who have followed this club through thick and thin ( mostly thin) for years.People who come into the club need to be more aware of past history(seven visits no wins) and not single out one game when emotions are raw rather than the support that's been there all season. Its poor pr!

Straight talking from him here. No complaints from me about that. He has praised fans when they deserve it. Also straight about teams shortcomings. Bored with the 'we are too big' type questions from interviewers. He gave it short shrift.
Still think his strides are shit though

it's the question that's provoked him, probably sick of hearing how big we are and shouldn't be in league 1. he is pointing out that Charlton could say the same. Obviously there is a flaw in that their fans have largely boycotted their games the last few years.. but still it's a fair point made badly

I am sure he has been quoted recently that Ross got the job because he guaranteed promotion . I can’t remember where but it’s been discussed here

Not just a few months..he needs to be more aware of the garbage people have had to endure for years because they love their football club and will go no matter what
