Charlie Methven on metro radio

The interviewer said something along the lines of for a club of our size we need to be out of league 1.

Methven then interrupted before a question could be properly asked and said supporters need to get real. Charlton had 40k to our 34k and were louder than us.

Not sure at all why he took it down that road but he did.
And that Charlton have been in the prem in the recent past.
It was just to highlight that their supporters will think the same as us.
Theyre not as big. But it's reasonable to think that they think the same as us and that they are too big for league one

I went to the Valley to see Charlton play Bradford on the Checkatrade weekend. The place was half empty and the atmosphere was dead. Loads of people in the stands slagging off the players and only about 10,000 there.
Maybe Charlie should get himself to other grounds when Sunderland aren’t in town and see how dire some support is.
I’m not trying to slag Charlton off but it was a one off final about an hour from their home ground and they only had about 4,000 more fans than us.
Just a thought Charlie, if our team had actually turned up and played some decent football the atmosphere might have been better.

Don’t expect our resident snowflakes to understand anything put into context.

Their support was bolstered by about 29k day trippers.

The sad bastards were singing mag songs in Baker Street before the match :oops:

I take your point mate, but the atmosphere was flat before kick off as well. It was just a strange day

Crowds yes.
History is fast becoming ancient history now mind.
1 trophy since the war and even that was a giant killing act as oppose to a big club adding to their tally.
Is our profile that big?
I reckon Charlton will have had any many top half Prem league finishes as us in last 60 year.

I would say we would probably be classed as bigger but not significantly.
We are definitely a bigger club, not sure what this debate is even about.

If our team had turned up and played some decent football we wouldn’t have been in the play offs in the 1st place

What ? You would actually call someone a parasite because they watched a match in a bar?

I wasn't referring to that myself. But actually if they only watch the match in that way then I guess they are by definition.

starting ???? he does realise Sunderland is not a wealthy city and in total over 70,000 fans travelled down in the space of a couple of months ??

Probably more - I'd say that for every fan who travelled for the check-a- trade at least another travelled for the weekend many taking families for a cheap weekend in London. Sadly many who travelled for that spent so much on that weekend that they could hardly afford another trip. My group was 50% down and I know of another 14 who went to the check-a-trade only 3 went this time due to money and people being away

He got that bit canny wrong as well as he said they’ve spent the best part of the last 20 or 30 years in the Premier League. They haven’t. Maybe 7 seasons in the Premier League since it’s creation. So that’s about half of ours and we’ve been shite.

But no-one started a willy waving contest with Charlton in that interview apart from Mr Methven
