Gutted I was too young to experience the Broken Doll, it was knocked down before I got to a pub-drinking age.

Used to drive past it every time on the way to the match.

I used to love the Broken Doll - rough and ready and full of interesting characters. Sometimes a bit scary but always fun. I used to love the Strawberry before it was done out. You don't get pubs like this in Newcastle anymore other than the Trent House and the Crown Posada. You get more of those sorts of pubs in Sunderland now.

was in the doll one sunday afternoon, some fucker opened the door and threw a thunderflash (think they were used to scare birds away from airport runways) in.
never heard a f***ing bang like it in me life. surprised the windows remained intact, ears were ringing for hours.
happy days!

I remember being sat in the Forth and these lads were chucked out for being underage. They took one of those glass ashtrays - really heavy - and hoyed through one of the windows from the outside - those windows are massive. Not as radgy as your story but everyday tales of drinking in the '80's.

aye, got me on a proper nostalgia trip now!
80s post match drinking in the bigg market when all the pubs were doing staggered happy hour triples for a £1, stuff of nightmares!
mind you, always preferred drinking outside the city, pubs of legend include the sun at swalwell, the travellers rest, sunniside, the excelsior, dunston and an honourable mention to (I'm a wickham lad originally, but did me apprenticeship at the ever ready) the kings head in stanley.

all debauched!

:)

I'd throw The Trafalgar in Gateshead into the mix as well.

yes indeed!

you ever venture in to the ford at byker?
never saw balls on the pool table. its sole use was for weighing drugs on.

My family used to run there, the plough, the tap and spile & another up where Warner bro's used to be that slips my mind, at various times throughout the 60's to mid 90's. I've heard some canny stories

For all his long winded essays I’ll grudgingly admit that generally speaking he mostly knows what he’s on about. However in this case how he’s managed to get it so spectacularly wrong is a mystery. Unless he’s fishing.
Yeah, I was making a point. That there's usually more to it than meets the eye.

The main reasons were he dismantled a decent team and replaced them with shite and that he won about three games in the calendar year
So, there's more to it than meets the eye then? Good to know.
