man utd lost money last quarterMan Utd are still in the top 6 and generating nearly £600 million revenue. They can afford to bounce back as they can still sell their flops and recoup a lot of money.
You say the format of the European competion was different. Aye it was and the money was miniscule decades ago compared to what it is now. That is exactly why the top 6 won't change that much because the non Premier League money the clubs have got in recent years now give them the advantage before the ball is even kicked for the next season. Look at the money Liverpool and Spurs are getting as it's going to be over £90 million each regardless of who wins.

This is more than most other clubs could dream of spending after you just take wages away from their revenue. I posted this image from the 2016-17 season revenues just to show what is left after wages and you can just see how much more spending power the clubs have on top of paying huge wages. Most of the teams wages are bigger than most other clubs total revenues! Leicester have £70 million more than usual given they earned that in the Champions League but they're the only team to do this in 14 seasons!

Now do you realise that all this money from the last decade making the big 6 as financially strong as they are is now having an effect on the rest of Europe? 4 of them got to the 2 European Finals and Man City got to the Semi Finals of the Champions League and Man Utd got knocked out in the quarters when their form nose dived. The big 6 aren't just dominating the domestic leagues but possibly now going to dominate the European scene in the coming years.
