And up steps Cattermole....

Just been watching it back on quest. It's not a bad penalty, it's on target, just the luck of the keeper going the right way.

Gooch's penalty was phenomenal but there is always an element of risk taking those.

Catt's wasn't bad, he hit it reasonably well and it just so happened it was a nice height for the goalie and he went the right way.

Taking a penalty is all about risk management. You can take it like Gooch and back yourself and take the goalie out of the equation but the probability of hitting the target decreases. Catt's didn't bottle his penalty, it was hit fair enough and not a wanky powder puff on target that the goalie saves every time if he goes the right way.

I've never liked Cattermole but he was excellent today. Would have been MoM if McGeady hadn't scored two. Held the team together, body on the line throughout the game. Carried Leadbitter and Power in the second half. I never thought he was going to score the penalty but he didn't do a Whitley or anything daft, and for all we know there were only 5 players who volunteered.

I’m happy to criticse him for missing but at least he stepped up.

What’s Wyke’s excuse? A striker not taking a penalty? Pathetic.

Do you know what the order was, if cattermole had scored and the shoot out had went on?

I suspect if grigg and Leadbitter been able to last out the full game, those two would have took two, before cattermole was involved

No I don’t. Wyke is paid to score goals, he should have stepped up.

Regardless of the fact he’s scored a couple this season I wouldn’t have Cattermole anywhere near the first 5 takers.

Anyway we digress, the game was lost at half time.

It was a poor pen, good height for the keeper and completely telegraphed it. Shame as he had one of his better games today.

Still, I'm sure the £30k a week he's still drawing out of a League One club will soften the blow.

For all his shortcomings he f***ing loves us. He's divided opinion over the years so much so that if he'd have scored the winning pen he would've been lauded as a Sunderland legend.
Chin up Catts lad. Fans were tremendous today. Can't fault them, the very best of the best. Wouldn't be surprised if he scores the winning pen in the play off final. We still believe in love....

We will go up automacially now.

We'll be bringing him off before the pens next time
I turned to my wife as Catts walked up to the penalty spot to take his penalty. I quote he will miss it always telegraph the direction of his penalties sure enough they saved it....I thought who makes all 5 penalty kicks? How many penalty kicks have we seen when both sides miss....Barcamouth made them all....Depressing to say the least....

Yeah, fair play to the lad, he had the bottle to step up to the challenge but the management shouldn't have let him anywhere near pen number two.

Got to forget about it quick and get on with the the league but I still think Honeyman being captain for me is like a novelty that is just taking the mick now.

Don't get this should be lauded for having the nuts to take a penalty lark. Its their job. And they are paid vast sums for doing it. It's ten times worse when they miss the f***ing goal. Saved, fine. Happens. Blazing it waddle or Pearce esque yards over the bar is unforgivable for a pro.

Like Batty ,Catts is a big enough character to get over a penalty miss.

Not World Cup 98

You must have been on the sauce lad, check the record books... They're less infallible than your memory.

Ince, Batty both missed. Shearer, Owen and Merson scored.

I've seen a lot worse penalties trickle-in. Keeper made a good save, something ours failed to do. You can't win a shoot-out if the other team scores five, after all.

Wasn't the captain part of the same squad of Sunderland players "Sunderland squad back Cattermole with strong message ..."?
It was Leadbitter, O'Nien and Power. Honeyman was probably too embarrassed to speak. Captain & number 10 not being one of the 5 penalty takers man. Imagine Kevin Ball shirking that responsibility.
