And up steps Cattermole....

How anyone can give him pelters for having the balls to step up and take a penalty in a shootout is beyond me.

If he'd have scored all five penalties himself there are people on here who couldn't force themselves to say a good word about him.

You must have been on the sauce lad, check the record books... They're less infallible than your memory.

Ince, Batty both missed. Shearer, Owen and Merson scored.
Yes your right too much drink in London. But Ince defo bottled a pen....possibly Euro 96? Please keep me right on this one.

I've seen a lot worse penalties trickle-in. Keeper made a good save, something ours failed to do. You can't win a shoot-out if the other team scores five, after all.

It was Leadbitter, O'Nien and Power. Honeyman was probably too embarrassed to speak. Captain & number 10 not being one of the 5 penalty takers man. Imagine Kevin Ball shirking that responsibility.

As proven when he stepped up in 98 with both our strikers bottling the first five

I am probably the polar opposite of a catts fan. I would drive him to the knackers yard myself. However. You can’t have a go at him for having the balls to step up and take a penalty

Why is all the talk put in terms of "having the balls" or "bottling it". (Not just you, most posters).

What about sober judgment? What about those who are crap at taking penalties? Or those who know that there are players who are better than they are with a dead ball?

Is a player to be praised for taking one, when he's either "going for glory" (his own!) or steps up out of fear of being called "a bottler" on a message board? All this when that's not particularly his skill and we'd better off if he was #11 on the list.

Can’t stand the lad, had the balls to step up, but should never have had the option.
Fed up of him yesterday making the calm down, motion with his hands and turning his back to the ball.
I didn’t think he played very well at all, certainly not all his fault for the second half surrender, but played a massive roll in it.

I think you should see the Sunderland Echo which reports on what Honeyman says post match.

85k fans there, he was at the 'wrong end' yet still made that walk and took one...gets my respect for that and i am not his greatest admirer by a long way.
I'll echo that. The pressure must have been immense, especially for him as the 'Top Dog'. I feel for him - mentally.

He's class Catts like . Can't finish for shit but made sure he took the earliest pen possible after our main pen taker, while others withered and melted.

Balls of steel. Credit to O'Nien as well.

At least he took one. Others players need to take a long look at themselves. Spineless.
I understand the first part of your post completely.
McGeady, Cattermole, Gooch, Power and O'Nien all deserve credit for bravery.
I'm not sure why their bravery results in Honeyman, Wyke etc being branded spineless. They couldn't all be in the top 5.

How many sets of penalty takers at clubs wouldn't include the striker in the first 5 - doubt it's many. Not confident of beating the keeper with a dead ball from 12 yards isn't a great cv entry for the role of 'goalscorer'.

Cattermole can't take penalties. He can hardly finish usually from 4 yards. His penalty was one of a player who can't take them. Perfect height for keeper, midway between the center of the goal and the corner.

Honeyman, who is plying his trade as an attacking goalscoring midfielder, couldn't even back himself to take one over a bloke who can't. If the captain wants a penalty he gets one. He's had a lot more experience of playing in front of large crowds so should be able to handle the pressure better than O'Nien as well who held his nerve on arguably the most pressurised kick.

Honeyman, as captain, chose not to stick his neck out and take one, and instead threw Catts under the bus knowing full well Catts wouldn't bottle it despite being shite at them, and would likely miss.

Lad who's meant to be a goal scorer scared to shoot. Shocking. Unless of corse he's just absolutely shite and knows it. Like Wyke for example.

What dis you think of Quinn bottling a penna for Ireland in the World Cup?

It was a good save. Decent height for him but as been said, fair play to Cattermole for stepping-up and it wasn't a bad penalty. Someone has to miss.
