And up steps Cattermole....

How anyone can give him pelters for having the balls to step up and take a penalty in a shootout is beyond me.
This is what I do not understand, taking a pen in a Sunday league cup final with your mates counting on you is nervous enough, imagine that in front of 40k people, anyone who stands up and takes one is a good un, miss our score it happens, some of the best players in the world miss pens

I wouldnt have Cattermole in my team but I will never criticise him for missing a penalty, at least he had the balls to take one. My angst would be aimed at the likes of Honeyman, the captain, and in particular Wyke, a centre forward who's paid to score goals but who thinks he can't score from 12 f***ing yards.

Exactly! Lionel Messi missed a penalty in the 2016 Copa America final.

He'll have volunteered himself. That's the guy that he is. But really the boss should have said, "Lee, no".

Still, difficult to win a shoot-out when the other team scores five. Just because Cattermole misses, doesn't mean we necessarily win.

There wasn’t a lot more to choose from... honey woman should have been up ... then Wyke before Catts IMO, otherwise wat the hell they doing as attacking midfielder and striker.
We were never going to win shoot out with Grigg and Leadbitter off

No sign of any backing from the captain.

There’s so many man. Ronaldo missed one in the 2008 champions league final.
John Terry falling on his arse is one of the best.

Beckham sending one to dock with the space station v Portugal

I am probably the polar opposite of a catts fan. I would drive him to the knackers yard myself. However. You can’t have a go at him for having the balls to step up and take a penalty

Luca Toni didn't take one in the 2006 World Cup Final. He was the Italian centre-forward. They won that penalty shoot-out.

And turkey in qualifying f***ing lifting penalties them

The divine ponytail missed one in the World Cup final in USA 94
One of the greatest shames was n football that. Excellent World Cup he’d had

All this business about who does and doesn’t ‘have the balls to step up’ is - or should be - complete nonsense.

This isn’t Sunday League, it’s a professional team with a professional manager and aspirations of returning to the premiership.

I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes but any professional manager worth his corn should have had lengthy practice in training and discussions over the sequence of penalty takers, with contingencies for who is on the field at the end. So the players know exactly who’s taking and in what order, that way they aren’t frantic after the final whistle, they’re all mentally prepared for the next step. That’s just what a professional should be doing to prepare. If that’s what was done then fair enough it didn’t work out. If not then the coach wants shooting.

I’m reminded of a period during England’s ‘Golden Generation’ when we failed repeatedly at penalties, and the same bollocks was trotted out about ‘stepping up’, meanwhile England won the Rugby World Cup, despite having several sin bin periods. When the coach was asked if he was panicked during those periods he said ‘no, we practiced with two, three, four men sin binned’. At that time IIRC rugby had been a professional sport for a grand total of nine years.

The players have had two weeks without a match and certainly wouldn’t have been doing full training every day so they’ve had ample chance to discuss and practice this. If they haven’t done that then frankly they don’t deserve to win the shoot out.

Good old Italy. Dichio, our centre forward, didn't take one against Charlton in 98 … we lost, now we'll never know.

Agree with this. Although as another poster said the manager should have said no. He isn't the cleanest striker of the ball and to be honest his penalty looked like a shot that the goalkeeper coach takes pre match to warm up the keeper

As stated
At least he had the balls to go up and take one
