Was sited there as it was in the middle of the town (as it was at the time (1900s)) so all extremities were equidistant from the station, Southwick, Fulwell, Grangetown and Herrington.

Never knew that.

As a kid I lived in one of the cottages a few yards from it's main entrance. Mam used to send us in to nick the duff coal. A lorry driver who tried to drive his wagon in with the back raised was killed there when it brought the huge stone lintel down on his cab.

My aunt lived in Annie Street. Those wooden cooling towers were extremely scary to a 5 year old.

Aye, they were a tad spooky. When they were stripped and repaired the wood was tipped out back of the Kings Arms opposite the church. Our bonfires were gigantic.
