Ive seen little snippets on PATHE and the odd bit here and there. As much as he seems touted as on eof the greatest footballers of his age, it often these days only tends to be Sunderland fans who will attest to this. Even them up the road would have to admit it.

Baseball boots?

Undoubtedly an icy pitch which wouldn't take a stud.

member clough going down and staying down which was not like him, then just putting up his arm for help. When the severity of his injury was announced there was hope he may return but sadly not to be. I'm sure that but for his injury we would have been promoted that season. He had scored 29 goals that season going into that fateful game, incredible!

Aye his boots were "baseball boots" a canvas plimsoll boot. No studs or a hard toe-cap like a footy boots were in those days. Apparently Charlie had blistered his feet in his footy boots on the hard earth surface so went in to the final game of the 1964 season wearing canvas baseball boots. Never seen a shot hit as hard. The balls hit the back of the net but look at the crowd and no ones reacted yet. It was that quick

Remember a discussion about this photo at the time

There is one person on the stairs top left in a natty white tank top who has the reactions of Quickdraw McGraw

The thread about the Sunderland fan photo got me thinking about other iconic SAFC photos.

I’ll start, in a match against Bury at Roker Park on 26 December 1962, in icy conditions and torrential rain, Brian Clough was put through on goal and collided with the goalkeeper. Clough tore the medial and cruciate ligaments in his knee, an injury which in effect ended his playing career.

I was stood right at the front of the Fulwell End that day, less than 10 yards away.

Me Dad was there and cloughie was his hero. He ended up working alongside the bury keeper at Magnet and Southern in Darlo. Ironically after giving him shit about if for years he ended up being mates with him. Chris Harker if my memory serves me right.
