It doesn't mean he's lying about everything.

If he doesn't want to sell the club why would he spend time, money and effort pretending ...

... it wouldn't make any difference to you lot whether he does or not.
If he wanted to sell, why hasn't he? We've had at least two parties named by reliable journalists (not the chronicle) interested.

because he can afford to wait for somebody to meet his price, and every year he gets a huge pile of PL money chucked at him, while doling out scraps to FSW to keep them ticking over. I wouldn't be surprised to find that fat mike and fatter rafa have been in cahoots all along, spinning a yarn to the black & white faithfull while getting richer and richer by the year.

The Mags base their 'factual argument' on how Ashley lied about the amount of money promised to Benitez.

If the highly principled Benitez was actually lied to, by the owner, there is no was he can stay.

He's supposed to be a WCM so will surely be in the frame for a club that can match his ambition ...
... Newcastle certainly can't but I suspect he already knew that when he took the job.

It's all been bluff and counter bluff hasn't it.

Everybody knows that anyway

Benitez stays he's a mug or just after money or both, if he was to wrap it in as a matter or principle he'd be a coward.
He's done his time and seen his contract through, and in May he'll be managing his last game.
He leaves with dignity and having played the politics game his reputation still in tact.
Whilst I think he's had nothing near the support of the hierarchy a manager at any club should expect, he's looked after himself in letting it be known that he's working under a prohibitive regime.
When I was reading Keegan's book it sounded like much the same was happening to him then.

Presumably Benitez was well aware that MA couldn't compete with the big boys but he took the job anyway, I wonder why?

I’d bet my house he’s there in August. If he was going to walk he’d have walked by now. He’s staying for the big salary or knowing he’s not going to get a job more suitable than this one. I’d wager it’s both reasons.

He was either incredibly arrogant or naive to think he’d change the owners way of running his club.

I doubt he will be. Parting of the ways suits everybody.
The club get rid of the fans figurehead. They get rid of somebody who focuses the blame on them.
Benitez walks away blame free and as often our support say "you couldn't blame if he packed it in"
The club can even spin it that they tried to keep him but he rejected their offer.
The club save money on the wages of the manager and get somebody more willing to play their game in for less than half the price.

Youre point is based on Benitez wanting to go. I don’t believe he does. Of course I may be wrong but I havnt seen or heard anything to suggest he actually does.
I also don’t believe the owner wants to get rid of him because he’s the fans figurehead ? He appointed him knowing fine well that would be the case.

Thered be absolute outrage though and gates may finally drop and protests intensify. I think MA would rather pay Benitez £10M than that on a player to keep the fans partly onside.

I don’t think the gates would drop if he went. They’ve never dropped despite relegations, renaming ground, selling every decent player etc. Benitez isn’t as glorified by all as some may believe.
