Stops protests, gives him an excuse not to invest early in the window (which means there's a greater chance he won't have to invest at all), and changes the mood around the club.

End of the day he'll only sell if he can get c£300m, keep the adverts up, keep the merchandising rights, get a bonus if we stay up etc. Anyone stupid enough to agree to all that would probably be too stupid to run a football club.

Transfer business. Sorry, thought that was obvious.
In the space of two posts you say he tries to sell the club and doesn't try and sell it, it's like Schrödinger's football club.

Do you think he shouldn't get the going rate for a premier league club? If someone wanted to buy the club then Mike would sell. Do you honestly think Ashley will be on holiday saying 'no, I'm away, no work talk'? He's the kind of bloke who always at work, that's why he's a billionaire
The mags will have you believe they are huge club famous all over the world with millions of fans and huge potential and that Ashley is pocketing all the millions of pounds of profit for himself. A very well run club (finance wise) but they expect him to sell the club for peanuts.

Edit.... sorry the adverts that he has come out and said are only there because they didn't sell to other companies. If anyone wanted to pay for that advertising they would have that space
I have no problem with him getting what the club is worth. The club is not worth £300m + all the merchandising, advertising and performance stipulations though.
If he truly wanted to sell he'd sell.

You genuinely think there are no companies who want to advertise their company on boards in one of the more televised stadiums in the Premier League? Either they won't pay what he's asking (in which case he's asking too much), or they don't want to be associated with Sports Direct.

He's claiming he wants to sell.

Do we?

That's good to know, I'll let all the other Newcastle fans know that you'd sussed us.

My Local MP probably wouldn't give a shit.

Sure, but it's an educated opinion.
Well here's my opinion.

Ashley always intended to give Rafa money for this window but the fat one has played the media and the fans brilliantly.

He's claiming he wants to sell.
He wasn't paying for the Sports Direct advertising until recently, why do you then think Mike would turn down money from other companies? (Any amount is more than nothing) Either he's correct about nobody wanting that space or he's not as greedy as you lot make out

Why would he claim to sell? He wants out, you want him out, nee one wants in

I had you down as one of the smarter ones. Surely this is obvious?

Edit - Not sure why I focused on that bit, the whole lot is crackers.

Does he really need more advertising for his tat? Surely it benefits him more to have more income from outsiders?

Obviously because having cheap advertising (which has cost him nothing for most of his reign) is more valuable to him.
He claims he wants to sell, but he's not a motivated seller. As it stands he's in no hurry to get out, hence asking for more than it is worth and tacking on advertising, merchandising and performance stipulations.

He’s got prime advertising space to an audience of, conservatively, tens of millions globally. Of course he’s not going to give that up without an absolutely absurd offer.

There’s been reports of members of protest groups contacting the club on behalf of charitable organisations looking to advertise in those areas but their enquires were ignored.

A bank pays to advertises the club benefits. SD advertises and SD benefits. Which do you think he cares more about, the club or his company?

Mike Ashley basically wants his money back that he's spunked on the mags which is circa £300M. I posted this a couple of weeks ago after about 15 minutes of research on Google.

I was talking to a mag at work the other day and said that Hall and Shepherd had all but bankrupted them prior to Ashley taking over. Of course he wouldn't have it.

So I had a bit look into the history of Ashley buying the mags. He paid £134M for the club and took on a further £143M in debt. Effectively paying £277M net for the club.

He quickly paid off £43M and gave them an interest free loan for the other £100M. I would imagine this would save them at least £5M a season (or about £60M in his dozen years in charge).

He famously didn't do due diligence and laterly found out that there was outstanding transfer fees of £27M on top of his initial outlay. This put the mags overall debt at £170M. He also discovered that Northern Rock had been persuaded to pay their shirt sponsorship money in advance so there was no more revenue due for the rest of that contract. I'm not sure what this total figure was (they were paying about £4M a season) or how long was left on the contract?

Now bear in mind that TV money has grown from £1.7 billion in 2007 to £5.1 billion today. Effectively TV is about 80% of turnover at most clubs. That £170M debt level was bad in 2007 but in effect it was far worse than it would be today with only a third of the TV money back then.

Ashley might not be a sugar daddy but the mags would have been Portsmouth, Leeds or Sunderland(!) without him.

Back to my initial statement, yes the mags were all but bankrupt when Ashley took over.

Ashley saved the mags, end of.

It's now reported that he pays for that space, do you know if that's more or less than other companies for similar space in ground?

If a bank pays £50000 for space or SD pays £50000 for a space, why does it matter?

Reports versus a definitive.

When a lot on here struggle with the existence of mutual exclusivity I can see why this other comprehension problem is a stretch.

Really?

Yes, I know he pays for advertising now but it is unclear what that is in comparison to similar advertising space.

Is Ashley not paying for space?
