He's played some cold-weather MLS matches. For example, he scored twice in a well-remembered game that was played in a snowstorm in Minnesota a couple years ago. Doubt he'll be seeing much worse than -10C with snow in England. Atlanta itself has a domed stadium, of course, so the home weather there is hard to beat.

As said Newcastle probably did spend over the odds on him, but it will be interesting to see how he fairs out.

As a Mackem exiled in Atlanta and watching Atlanta Utd home games all last year, I can tell you that this lad pretty well won them the MLS. He’s an excellent player. HOWEVER.... the standard is way below Prem and he has acres of space. I think he may struggle with the physical side over there - he’s a bit lightweight. Whilst I would thank him for the memories last year, ovbviously I hope he gets kicked high, fails miserably and decides to return to Atl in the summer !!

What I asked was, would you be more likely to be successful buying proven PL players for 20m, than buying obscure players with no international pedigree, (despite his national side being weak) from obscure divisions for 20m. There's a reason why the most successful PL clubs tend to buy from other PL clubs, or from the major European leagues, and they buy players with pedigree or potential. As I said, you don't see many PL teams hoying 25m bids for 25 year olds from Polish league who've got 10 caps for Slovakia. Replace 'Polish league' with MLS and 'Slovakia' with Paraguay, and you see why I think it is a very strange transfer. He has no pedigree, and he's far too old and expensive to be 'one for the future'.

I'm not saying he'll fail, it is just a very odd transfer. As I said earlier, if you looked at his profile - where he's played, his age, his international career etc, it doesn't scream 'PL club record record-shattering transfer', it screams 'tentative loan to Bristol City'.

The problem with that is that you don’t get proven premier league number 10s for £20m

You keep mentioning Will Hughes who is a completely different type of player.

Yes most clubs would rather sign a proven pl player at the same price as an unproven one but that just isn’t possible unless you are getting someone in final year of contract.

He's started 3 games for Paraguay since July 2017...

And Paraguay have played 8 or 9 games in that time, and he was on the bench for a few of them.

You missed out 4/5 million for their American RB that we had on loan, can't remember his name and I'm too lazy to find out at this time of the morning. Quick lad, reminds me of a dog chasing a ball.

I was simply using the example the other poster gave me. That he would rather sign an obscure, 10-cap, 25 year old Paraguayan from an obscure league than a 'an average player from Watford' for 25m.
