Sunderland have this afternoon confirmed the departure of top scorer Josh Maja, who has joined Ligue 1 side Bordeaux after a long and protracted saga over the player’s future.

Whilst various fees regarding how much the club are set to receive have been bandied around over recent days, it’s our understanding that the club are only set to receive around £1.5m from the deal - and the receipt of any future installments is dependent on a variety of factors and clauses which, of course, depend upon how successful Maja is over in France.

The kicker, however, is that the fee itself may not actually be placed back into the club’s coffers due to an outstanding payment that has still yet to be made to Bordeaux for the signing of Wahbi Khazri, who was brought to Wearside in the January transfer window of 2016 by Sam Allardyce.

Sunderland still owe Bordeaux a sum which is almost as much as they’re set to receive for Maja, meaning that the fee will not be available to Jack Ross and the club’s recruitment team to immediately inject back into the club.

That said, we believe that the club are still committed to bringing new players to the club before the window shuts, and that was always the case even before Maja departed.

With just six days left until the transfer window closes, the club are faced with needing to replace not one, but two forwards - Jerome Sinclair’s departure following his return to Watford means that we still need to ensure the void that he left behind is also filled.

Well, there are players who are dumb like that, Maja just never struck me as one. You don't exactly see his name in the tabloids having done something stupid. That's why I'm leaning towards his agent being a weasel.

You wouldn't see his name in the tabloids due to him only being an academy lad who's had a really good couple of month in league one....he's no superstar yet mate but he's actions over the past few weeks have boarded on that of a jumped up little fadge packet who's got a bit ahead of himself!

The agent is a spunk trumpet also but you expect that from them.

where is this information from?

It's a risk for JM at this time of his career.

It's simply a payday for his Agent

If it goes tits up JM should sue his agent in a PPI type of way

It's a risk for Maja .But it is risk free and the best of both worlds for his agent as if it doesn't work he'll get another crack over here. And it will be his agent who is making the decisions.

Reads like RR copy. The money will actually be available to Ross, because even if we don't get the cash in, we're also no longer committed to paying it out, if you see what I mean. There might be a cashflow issue in terms of timings, but that's probably solvable for the amounts involved.
That could be problematic for any substantial fee for someone like Grigg ? In terms of cash flow I mean

If the Bordeaux managers quotes are true, the lads an idiot, and his agent is a shithouse of the highest order.

Thought all outstanding transfer fees from Shorts ownership were now settled?

Didn't SD stated in one interview that all outstanding transfer balances were due to be or had been paid down.?

What’s the Bordeaux manager said?

"We knew him a little bit, I think we do not have time to look too much, we are focused on the field, to prepare the team. But we have a sufficiently professional team, specialists who take care of that. We knew him a little. His profile? We need a scorer, that’s what we need. Apparently, this season he scores goals. After, the game in France is different, there are plenty of things difficult to manage like that. It is a physically difficult championship, you have to be very strong in front and have the quality of a goalscorer.

"It’s a young player, knowing that a young player does not have that quality right now, it gets ready, it improves, it is fine...But it’s a young talent."

Not exactly endearing....

This is the sort of economics that would shame even an accountant. The article seems to suggest that we're worse off cos we've sold him to Bordeaux rather than someone else, which transparently isn't true. If you owe someone £1.5m and then you write £1.5m off then you are £1.5m better off. If you owe someone £1.5m and then you get £1.5m then you are £1.5m better off.

Sounds like a long-winded way of saying he's one for the future. Prepare for Bordeaux II in French National 2 with the semi-pros and amateurs, Josh.
