If he doesn’t sign I’d stick him in the stands and not even pick him for u23s. We have to make a point that the club is bigger than the player.
I don't understand why when he's the player at the club who we will probably find it hardest to replace in the team. The lad has every right to assess his options - it is the club who have let him get to this stage leaving him on a crap contract. Had he not performed since the start of the season he could have been left without a club and in limbo. Whilst he has not signed the contract the club has offered, he has not said he wants to leave. He is still performing, is still a Sunderland player so why would you not play him when he is playing well (if that changes fair enough drop him). This contract is a big decision for him and he has every right to take his time over his choice and assess what he feels is the best opportunity for him.

If he doesn’t sign, he has refused to extend his contract and is effectively working his notice period.

Doing that will make him unattractive at the end of the season.

Let him rot for a bit.

Buy a striker, the owners need to sort this or get a loan in if they have no cash.

We are supposed to be showing people we are no longer a soft touch.

Even though they have given him the contract he wanted?

Why's he stalling, if that's what he's asked for?

It's not being a soft to utilise an asset who is still on the payroll, if his head is right he needs to play, scoring the goals that gets us up might also increase his value when it goes to tribunal, letting him rot serves no purpose it's just cutting your nose off to spite your face.

@steve30000 That doesn't change the fact that he hasn't said he wants away and he is giving his all when he plays. We were told we he was offered the money he wanted but there are other things relating to a job other than money. If I was in his shoes I'd definitely be waiting to see what options I had.
For me, at the minute he's a Sunderland player, playing well, so I'd play him until his form changes, we sign someone better or until he signs for someone else. If that's now I'd say bye and hope he goes on to have a good career (except when he plays us) as he seems a good lad and a decent professional, but I do hope it is years down the line.

For those clamouring for us to throw the cheque book at Maja to make him sign, remember that one of the main reasons we are in this league in the first place is that we would offer whatever money we needed to in order to secure the signature of a player, even if it was more than a player was worth.

Perhaps the board are staying true to their mantra when they took over the club that we will no longer be taken for a ride and will no longer be made mugs of in negotiations. We could have offered what we consider to be a fair deal, though Maja’s agent disagrees about its fairness, but we have said take it or leave it. If that were the case then we would want him to take it so we are giving him time to decide but ultimately if he decides to leave it then we have the rest of the month to sell him.

Many people are considering one scenario where he stays and scores enough goals to secure promotion, or another where he leaves and we don’t score enough to gain promotion, but what about another scenario; We break the bank and still don’t score enough goals for promotion? Or he goes off the boil and doesn’t live up to the potential he is currently showing? Nobody owns a crystal ball for all we know he could become league 1’s Jack Rodwell and not come close to deserving the contract we give him.

And yes I am aware some people will view this as contrary to my position on previous posts, but then that’s because they didn’t read what I was saying in context and only read what they wanted to argue against.

Agree. These owners are going to be prudent. Whose to say that Maja may have just enjoyed the most prolific period in his whole career.......who's to say he hasn't. He will move for more money and fair enough to him. It's what 99.99% of footballers do.
