Dressing up as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air

I bought my mate a big black cock bottle opener from Greece.
I'm not quite sure why they had such a massive array of cock bottle openers.
Evidently tourists buy them, and I did.

I believe he hides it when his parents come round
When we went to amsterdam on a lads weekend I was surprised by how many people were using cock lighters :)

What a tit
did he just spend 7 hours using fake tan?

Cock lighters?! Dear me...

It looks more like boot polish than fake tan. Either way, he's a tit

So do you think it is ever acceptable to dress up as the fresh prince.

The reason this come about was because me and a mate were discussing these dressing up nights out people go on and how we have never done it. Me mate who said it is without doubt one of the most PC liberal types you've ever met so I was rather shocked when he suggested it

I said it would never be acceptable because obviously people would take offence and it would cause trouble but it's an interesting question.

He would look like vanilla ice if he didn't change his hair and black up so.... is it acceptable to go as your favourite character of a show if they are a different race?

I think you can dress up as whoever you like, but if you're dressing up with the intent of "blacking up" then you're an attention seeking bell.
There's tons of things you can dress up as. There's no harm in dressing up as your favourite character etc, regardless of what race you are.
You don't have to black up to complete the look.
It's like when you get people doing flash mobs dressed as a certain character.

If "Blacking Up" hadn't been used to basically mock black people for being black, I'm sure you could probably do it.
Unfortunately, people are twats

That was my view, it doesn't offend me personally if the intent is just to look like a black person, lets face it, lasses wear fake tan all the time. But it is difficult like everything regarding race considering the history.

Aslong as it wasn't something like the minstrel show where they are obviously making fun of black people and it was a genuine effort to look like a character I wouldn't be fussed, although the rest of the world might be

There's a big difference between putting on some fake tan, or even getting a natural tan and "blacking up" though, as I'm sure you agree.

That said I think I agree with your second bit. If I loved the character Blade and wanted to dress up as him, full costume etc, for something like Comi-con, then I think you may be able to get away with it.
There wouldn't be any malice in it, you just want to dress like that because you love the character.
That said, I think you could still manage without blacking up. You just might need to explain exactly who you are if it's not obvious to some people.

Aye but it's rubbish isn't it. It's like a bad costume. You need people to be able to recognise you straight away.

I mentioned the fake tan cos did you see that thing recently where some lass used fake tan and people started having a go at her for appropriating blackness or something?

Come to think of it a black lad at uni went as bruce lee, he yellowed his face a bit and stuck on different shaped eyebrows and a whig. Looked really good.

Covered this on the PF thread. When it’s a specific person I think it’s uncomfortable for people but probably comes from a place of admiration. E.g that mag kid as Les Ferdinand. It was awkward, but probably not ‘racist’.

The looky looky man outfit in question - almost certainly racist. It’s punching down to a stereotype.

We went on a fancy dress pub crawl at uni and the theme was you paired up with a mate and had to dress as an exaggerated version of them.

The awkward silence when one of the lads emerged from his flat blacked up because his partner was black was palpable

Was fine in the end like. I think people hadn’t even considered the likely outcome of that interracial pairing which was why people were a bit stunned
