have booked flights to Naples for 4 days next September. Have worked in Naples quite a bit but never managed to get down to Amalfi.

Is it worth town hopping or basing yourself in one and doing day trips. I will have a car and it’s just me and Mrs (anniversary weekend)

TIA x

Stayed in Sorrento for a week at the beginning of October. Worth staying there and traveling around using it as your base. At least thats what me and Mrs K did. Got a bus to Amalfi which stops in Positano. Took a ferry back to Sorrento from there. The train line in Sorrento takes you direct to Pompeii as well. You can also get the ferry to Capri from there as well which is worth a visit.

I love the Amalfi coast and have stayed in Positano (very expensive now apparently) and Priano, which is a lovely village about 6 miles along the coast towards Amalfi town.

Good advice about being careful on the roads - I got twisted blood going round the umpteen hairpin bends. The motor cyclists in particular drive like lunatics, mostly without the aid of a safety helmet!

Staying in Amalfi is perfect for 4 days.

We stayed in Amalfi and got the bus to Sorrento one day and felt like we were on the thing for hours! Capri is mint too.

Going next year and stopping near Sorrento but not in in. Planning on travelling around the coast by bus, getting the train up to Pompeii and the ferry over to Capri. Will investigate Ischia now :D

We stayed two weeks in Ravello, just above Amalfi. Plenty of places to visit around there: Positano was probably my favourite

Done a trip a few month back, Rome, Scapoli (family village), Naples, Sorrento.
Lush places but bay mental, sorrento was toppa but pricey, Pompeii bored the arse off me.

Capri, I didn’t get the hype. That said, I had three year old with me.

Sorrento, Positano, Vesuvius, Heracleum all worth a trip. Bus / train the easiest by far.

As has been said Sorrento is a good base, Capri is a nice day trip. Driving is an experience, need to be careful but don't be too scared of doing it, you just need to keep your nerve. The best tip I read was not to swerve to avoid scooters, you'll only then clip one on the other side you haven't seen. They're used to squeezing through gaps two inches narrower than the bike, let them do it. With regards the rules of the road for cars - there aren't any, expect the unexpected with regard to cars pulling out in front of you.
Herculaneum is far better than Pompeii, it's almost still intact, really interesting place
