We sat down with Sir Bob Murray - the man who was in charge of the club for 22 years, and not only built the Stadium of Light but the Academy of Light - and you can WATCH that chat in full on our Youtube channel now. What are we talking about this episode? How did Sir Bob come to own Sunderland AFC? Is he still a massive Lads fan? What was his...

AN INCORRECT STATEMENT

Didnt Johnston make it clear he was running his contract down and would be signing for Rangers no matter what ? Thats the way I recall it.
IF my recall is true, Johnston deserved the treatment he got from Reid.
Pretty much how I remember it. He wanted to go to Rangers and let his contract run down so he could.
As for Reid, thanks for the good times BUT he totally lost the plot in his last couple of years at SAFC and picked a few fights
he should have avoided.

I don't, to be honest. If Murray didn't want to go there they could have clipped it out without it being obvious, but filming it has robbed them of the chance to do that. I suppose that may have been why they didn't.

I think some of the stuff he said was very interesting (even if contentious) but agree he should have been pushed more. I worry that for RR it's sometimes more about 'Look who we've got to interview!' rather than an effort to actually dig deep. You don't want to go about pissing people off for the sake of it but you can't risk it being a whitewash either.
Tbf Conor isn't Paxman. And if he was, Berb would have shut him down then walked off. It was a monologue like many of his interviews over the years.
If Conor had gone in hard, we wouldn't have much to talk about.

Like a lot of famous/important people, Bob's well worth listening to when he's talking about what he's actually good at but veers into Billy Bullshitter territory when talking about anything else.

There's a difference between 'going in hard' and pushing a bit where necessary though. Particularly when RR are keen to talk the interviews up.

Agree with this. Not questioning anything just makes the podcasts a bit pointless. Not really worth listening to a load of bullshit (if it is indeed bullshit but without questioning it we will never know).

Tbf Conor is only a young lad and probably knows very little about Murray to question him further on anything.

Our finances were chronic from August 02 until he sold up. There was absolutely no hope for us until Quinn bought the club.

Have people forgotten how it felt walking out the stadium having been twatted 4-1 at home to Newcastle with them singing ‘youre just the worst team in history’ for the second time in three or four years?

I absolutely acknowledge his work on infrastructure and now in the community but it seems that some of the horrendous lows have just been completely wiped from some memories, including Murray’s. I mean the audacity to get shirty about Short not asking him for advice on appointing Di Canio. He appointed Butcher, Crosby, Buxton and Wilkinson man. The one appointment he got right he spent the majority of the podcast talking about his limitations!

As he says 13 million in laslandes and you with long contracts not to metion Marcus Stewart. Then Reid lost the dressing room and any good club man like Makin were booted out.

Mcarthy paid the price for Reids spending. Blew the lot comes to mind

20:30 in. With Bob Murray's permission, John Fickling says we tried to sign Paul Scholes and Paul Gascoigne. Murray sitting in front of a camera and microphone on RR stating that both were fictitious. And its worth watching the five minutes or so after as well.

Everything Murray says should be treated with caution

Great post.

Murray just game across as arrogant and self obsessed. Hardly had a good word to say about many people other than his ‘friends’. Glad someone has outed him as a billy bull shitter here. Shame on you bob. Trying to con ‘your people’ as you referred to us as.

Not sure that's a valid excuse really. Interviewers are expected to know about their subject.

Not saying it was bad mind you. But as you've said I think if you're going to interview someone they need to be held to some form of account for what they say.

No doubts that Bob cares about the club but can't help thinking he comes across as a stubborn, arrogant prick in the podcast. Just blames everything on anybody but him. Only think he admits he got wrong was the Wilkinson appointment. His timelines were very blurred as well. Could well be selective memory but he got quite a few things muddled up.

Scathing of Reid and his management of Summerbee, Makin etc and more scathing of signing Nunez and made it sound like he knew Reid was slipping at the time too. Yet gave him money for Laslandes. Was scathing of that deal and didn’t agree it with at the time seemingly according to the podcast. Yet then gave Reid £22m to spend in 02 after a good portion of fans had asked for Reid’s dismissal.

There’s so much of the podcast that could be taken apart in terms of Murray’s chairmanship. The period 91-95 is also whitewashed. Barely mentioned.

Yep, just dismissed the record lowest points total campaigns as Reid’s fault with no further comment.

Also then alluded to the success under Reid not been down to Reid but down to him .

I don’t think he’s come across well at all.

Yeah it was a bit disappointing that period wasn't covered. Would like to know what he had to say about Buxton and Butcher. 93-95 in particular was very grim.

Said it was due to still being financially crippled from 2003. It's a fair point but at the time it wasn't made clear exactly how bad the finances still were, a lot of supporters were given false hope when we got promoted , hoping that the nightmares of 02/03 would be a thing of the past. What followed was, in my opinion, our most embarrassing premier league season ever.
We were still skint but at the same time he pats himself on the back in the podcast for sorting the debt out

Funny how a bit of time and hindsight can change opinions. Bally is a club legend, and held in such high regard, but I remember he was not liked both at roker or the Sol by sections of the fans. Reidy is remembered as the best thing since sliced bread, but he wasn't half getting stick towards the end...

Really interesting listen to Bob. Righty he is now held in high regard by most safc fans. The stadium, training ground and the fact that we had come out of the shadow of the mags.

Real pity the Butcher, Buxton era wasn't mentioned. Even now playing fleetwood etc in the league we are light years ahead of that era.

Murray was very, very lucky that Reid came in and turned us around in those 7 games. We were certain to go down, playing in front of 13000, the stadium just a notion. Reid was Murray saviour, and took us on an incredible journey, that Bob was happy to go along with, seemingly with no contingency plan.

He stuck with Reid way to long, no doubt out of loyalty to the man who had given him everything. We could all see it at the time. That business of giving Reid a load of shares. Crazy. And keeping Reidy, caused us a legacy of damage that he refers to in the interview.

Thanks RR. Top interview.

Vitriol rained down from the stands iirc

Welcome back

I’m not really trying to excuse it. More an assumption of why he might not be challenged. I watched it on YouTube rather than listened to the podcast and he was just reading questions off an iPad. Noticed a couple of times something seemed to have been cut out but could have just been sloppy editing in post rather than attempting to cut something out they didn’t want to go to air.

The Chris Makin /Summerbee bust up was ludicrous IF the story was true.
Reid's buying near the end was shit with fredgaard, nunez and laslandes embarrassingly poor.

Early 90s were horrendous cup final excepted.
Allied to us being skint and shit the mags were resurgent and had money pouring from all orafices . Real gloomy times til Reidy came in.
That Notts co away game 93 was a real low point.

Never been to a game where there has been as much arguing/scrapping amongst our support as there was that day.
