RR: Bob Murray podcast

Finally got round to listening to it. He chucks Reid under the bus despite him being the only reason the Murray legacy is what it is, flatly denies the Scholes link (rightly probably as it was nonsense) despite his chief executive being on television categorically saying we had attempted to sign him.

I don’t think he comes across well at all in it. Tin hat back on
On second listen, and not under the influence of alcohol this time, I'd agree. Doesn't particularly come across well at times.

I've never been a big Murray fan but even people I know who like him have lost respect for him as a result of some of his comments particularly about Quinny Reidy and to a lesser extent Short.

In 1 hour 40 minutes talking about his 20 years as chairman the only people he is complimentary of are himself, Fickling, Callaghan, Stokoe and Phillips.

I actually agree with him on Reid but its obvious the demise was a mix of Reid losing the plot and Murray's incompetence. At one point he says Reid started to lose it when he signed Nunez - he signed him during the first 7th season.

He says Smith and McCarthy couldn't manage in the Premier League but along with Reid they were the only appointments he got right in 20 years, he barely has a good word to say about any of them.

I was massively critical of Short but to say he purposely and deliberately destroyed the club is ridiculous.

He tries to take credit for Henderson, Pickford (12 years old when Murray left), Wembley, clearing the debt that he accumulated. He says he had to build the North Stand when he did because he wouldn't get planning permission after they built the Beacon, ignoring that they were built 17 years apart.

Grateful for the stadium, academy and foundation but he talks absolute shit

Peter Reid started to buy players who are not Peter Reid type personality. Why would Peter Reid do that?
He had completely lost the plot or there was something really underhand.
How the man it got it so right with the SKPs, SNQ, Rae, Boulds, Schwarz, Makin’s, etc etc could end up with those players at the latter end smacks of complaceny and reliance on someone else’s decision making.

Falling out with players as stated in the video and not shit ones, not replacing them with decent players was the beginning of the end.
The way he treated Johnston was a disgrace.

Built it in pretty much the exact year TV money overtook gate receipts as the biggest proportion of our revenue

It's little wonder Reid was upset that money didn't get spent on the team

He sounds like a parody of a self-made millionaire. As others have said it would be nice to have some challenges to the answers in these interviews but appreciate you can't put off future guests by this approach. Maybe a review of the questions with older supporters who can remember the facts and who can give pointers to the potential responses and counter-questions? Enjoyed it still, I just think he comes across as a pompous bellend.

This is daft mind. The interviews lose all merit if they're scared of upsetting the interviewee. I like Murray but sounds like he's been allowed to say whatever he fancies without being pulled up on the bits that make no sense.

Won't have a word about Murray

But Murray was a puaper compared to short

& both saw us relegated

I wasn’t supposed to be explaining anything.... it was a statement.

AN INCORRECT STATEMENT

Didnt Johnston make it clear he was running his contract down and would be signing for Rangers no matter what ? Thats the way I recall it.
IF my recall is true, Johnston deserved the treatment he got from Reid.

Makes no difference it's the same with any player.

There were a few timed I just wanted the interviewer to push a little more. Murray was allowed to create his own history without much of a challenge.

I understand why RR wouldn’t though

I don't, to be honest. If Murray didn't want to go there they could have clipped it out without it being obvious, but filming it has robbed them of the chance to do that. I suppose that may have been why they didn't.

I think some of the stuff he said was very interesting (even if contentious) but agree he should have been pushed more. I worry that for RR it's sometimes more about 'Look who we've got to interview!' rather than an effort to actually dig deep. You don't want to go about pissing people off for the sake of it but you can't risk it being a whitewash either.

When he said we weren’t ready or prepared for promotion in 1990, we were in the top 6 the majority of that season, surely he knew there was a chance that we’d go up so why was he not prepared for that? Why wasn’t any planning or forward thinking taken then? Surely when we did go up that we a great opportunity to do something especially with the premier league round the corner, instead he failed to back Smith.

Awww thanks for the concern petal, but your refusal to accept SBM was anything less than the angel Gabriel is nonsensical.

Did he give a reason for only giving McCarthy 65 pence for transfers when we got promoted In 2005?

Said it was due to still being financially crippled from 2003. It's a fair point but at the time it wasn't made clear exactly how bad the finances still were, a lot of supporters were given false hope when we got promoted , hoping that the nightmares of 02/03 would be a thing of the past. What followed was, in my opinion, our most embarrassing premier league season ever.
