All the Teams who have won a major trophy since Newcastle?

The funny thing is if newcastle have that on display people will be asking why they have a model of the new bridge at sunderand in the trophy cabinet.
Is that what the new bridge at Sunderland looks like? Not a bad looking bridge.

From Wikipedia:

"The competition was initially only open to teams from cities that hosted trade fairs and where these teams finished in their national league had no relevance. Early competitions also featured a one city, one team rule. After 1968, it was sometimes referred to as the Runners-up Cup, with teams now qualifying based on league position."

So it was referred to as the 'Runners up Cup' yet the Competition ended up with a club that came 10th in their domestic league win the thing? Hardly comes across as a prestigious trophy. The fact they beat Ujpest Dozsa in the final also supports that.

The most prestigious club winners of the Fairs Cup were Barcelona, Valencia, Leeds, Roma and Arsenal.

Compare that to the Cup Winners Cup where you have Barcelona, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Man United etc. Or the UEFA Cup, which didn't allow 10th placed sides to enter the competition: Inter, Juventus, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich.

You do realise that all of these other clubs you mention did actually play in the Fairs Cup but weren’t good to win it (we beat Inter the year after we won it)? Save for Real Madrid who kept winning La Liga or the Spanish Cup and didn’t appear until the first season it became the Uefa Cup.

You clearly have no idea how good Ujpest Dozsa were at that time (won the Hungarian League 8 times in 10 years and following their defeat to us they got to 2 QF and 1 SF of the European Cup in the next 4 years).

As comparison the same year we won the Fairs Cup Dunfermline Athletic got to SF of the CWC a competition won by Slovan Bratislava in front of 19k fans (our average home attendance in the Fairs Cup was over 55k and the combined attendance for the SF was over 130k) against a Barcelona side that had only played 3 ties to get to the final. This was a Barcelona side that the previous year had lost in the 1st round of the Fairs Cup and the year after lost in the 3rd round of the Fairs Cup (to Inter who we beat in the 1st round the following year).

It’s quite clear which was the stronger competition.

By the way, the Fairs Cup abolished the 1 club 1 city rule as far back as 61/62 but the English FA continued to apply this until 1974 by which time it was the Uefa Cup and Everton kicked off about it.

Good post. Very informative

The only clubs to never appear below the 2nd tier in English football......

Arsenal
Chelsea
Tottenham
West Ham
Man United
Liverpool
Everton
Newcastle
So man city and safc are in good company

Let's be honest take away the Mags support which is their biggest contributing factor in being classed as a fairly big club but, you have to realise that as 1 club in a huge catchment area and a huge city that its not that much of a shock, then they are a nothing club I the grand footballing scheme of things

Still more successful than your club on all the major tables of such assessments.

Championships? Most recent league championship? Fail.

Bit of an embarrassing slip when you even talked about tables. Fa cups are relatively worthless, we even won one as a second division team.
There are a few tables that have been compiled of most successful English clubs. We are consistently above you.

Etc

So when you said "all the major tables" you meant ones that nobody gives a shiny shite about.

I repeat, fa cups are nice and shiny, and you get a nice day out at Wembley humiliating Leeds and cheat Revie, but 6 wins often against lower division teams doesn't come anywhere near winning the championship.

"All the major tables". :lol::lol:

You’re right. I’m not sure what I was thinking when I wrote “all the major tables”!

Essentially it’s all years ago so the whole thing is a moot point when looking at trophies won. More relevant would be looking at league positions over last 10/20/30 years but I can’t be bothered!

Three of those league wins were pre-1900, playing in a 16 team league against the likes of Accrington, Notts County and Preston. Of the clubs you competed with to win your first title only Everton, Burnley, Stoke, West Brom and Newton Heath are not “lower division teams” now.

What does it matter anyway? Neither club has won the title in living memory. Neither club has won anything for almost half a century. Aside from the obvious exception, the list the OP requested is exactly the same for both clubs.
