It carries a lot of weight. You could have had a reasoned debate about which club was the bigger in the 80s but dear me we are accusing them of delusion and at the same time arguing that we are bigger than NUFC when no-one at all outside of our own fan base would agree. This thread would get laughed at a amongst every other set of fans in the country.

Agree with you on this.

I would be embarrassed trying to argue we were a bigger club than them up the road if I was in a reasoned debate with a fan of another club.

They would just turn around and say you're in league 1 and they're in the premier league ... end of debate and me feeling like a mug.

Only place it's acceptable to say such things is on here where some people think they are seen as bigger/more die hard MLF if you say Sunderland are a bigger club, when in reality it's just not the case, doesn't make you any less of a supporter to be a realist and not spout shite.

Majority of people who do so are bairns or keyboard warriors who get worked up by mags on their forum, I enjoy the debates and it's all banter to me, I wouldn't let it ruin my day if a mag posted something on here to wind us up, our day will come as will theirs, that's the life of a football fan you have to enjoy the highs and ride out the lows.

Ironically a lot of people are loving our lowest point in my lifetime because of the simple fact we are winning, I am too but as long as it's just this season and we make progress next year, we are playing well below the clubs potential.

Ignore the people questioning your support mate, you've been there and seen it all, your experienced enough to rise above childish digs about who's a bigger club and to prove it.

And for what it's worth, I do see Leicester as a bigger club than Newcastle, thanks to their recent league win, perhaps in another 10 years time that will change, we'l just have to wait and see

Flawed. Number of trophies added together. League titles should count for at least 2 even 3 FACups. Some minor trophies on there too.

So if you say the league title is worth 2 points, and the fa cup one point then that gives sunderland a total of 14 points.
Newcastle have a total of 14 points.
Better make it 3 points for a league title....

People have to prove any way they can Sunderland are bigger than Newcastle, when loads of Sunderland fans even agree it's not true.

Yeah. I don't give a fuck really. Don't think either team is 'bigger' over the whole history, but clearly the mags had a couple of good runs and we're hopefully coming out of a bad one.

Hopefully we're both in the championship next year. I miss the 6 points.

Don't think anyone is trying to prove Sunderland are bigger than Newcastle, think it's more a case of people wanting to know what makes Newcastle supposedly bigger than Sunderland.

As far as I can see the only thing big about Newcastle is their egos and their bellies.

They have been like. Before the thread was merged it was called something like 'list all the reasons why sunderland are bigger than Newcastle'. Somebody was arguing with a bristol city fan that Sunderland were bigger than Newcastle. Loads of other people started giving reasons. Plenty people said Newcastle were bigger and were getting called mags and not real SAFC fans.

Just google English clubs ranked by trophies. He's pasted it from Wikipedia, the sub section for domestic trophies

Between 1978 and 2014 I missed around 8 home games in 36 years at Sunderland and was a regular away supporter between 83 and 96. Attended all the lowest attendance games full members cup, Plymouth at home attended the famous 6-0 West ham game in 1977 as my first game that I remember properly. Other supporters on here who know me and could verify are NCB and Walter / Bristow. So would you like to put your record up against mine?

With regards to Newcastle being a bigger club, they blatantly are but bigger doesn't mean better.

Whislt its a fairly abstract concept, and all dependant upon the yardstick you use to measure it (trophies won / time in the top division / attendances / etc.) I think if you took a straw poll of the public, they would say NUFC.
However; I entirely agree with you that bigger does not mean better, and certainly not in this case.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if SAFC (re-organised and having re-discovered its identity and definitely a club on the up) wins promotion and faces NUFC (everything BUT united) next season.
Seven In A Row?

Won't play each other 7 times next season.

Is the criteria trophies won and nowt else when determining who is the biggest club?

6 games to win the FA Cup, as opposed to 38 to win the league (or 42 when it was a real competition).
How would that work out?
