Changing Career

Teachers have great pensions and loads of holidays they say.
They also get great training in multi tasking so they can do their marking at home while posting on here

One doesn't rattle a tin, dear sir.
That's not legal.

I'm starting to think about maybe a regional job but I'm sick of my commute now so more travelling doesn't really appeal!

I don't know enough about it. If it's tapping up old Alumni for money that doesn't really do it for me
The charity I volunteer for (on the particular programme I am involved with) only travel during term time, they set their own visits and agendas (based on school availability) and work from home the rest.

I personally do a national role with the flexibility to control my own diary and work from home the rest of the time. (I don’t work for a charity).

That way I can plan when I need to be home and also never miss out on anything with the little one.

Dear Hivemind of the SMB,

As many of you know, I've been in Fundraising for many a year (15 if you include Uni).
In job terms, it's all I've known.
I've volunteered at a brewery and a radio station and I've worked behind a bar many moons ago.

But I'm starting to feel I need a new challenge. Problem is I have absolutely no idea what to do.
I can't just sack it and look for a job as I have dependants. I need to find something and move into it.
I also don't want to take a massive hit financially - it doesn't make sense to at the moment.

I suppose I have a lot of transferable skills, as they say, but I have no idea what to change them into.

Have you ever had a total career change? What did you go from and start doing?
I could do with some (helpful and sensible) suggestions, please!
Financial services to social Work for me at 49.

@Keawyeds - what skills do you have from your fundraising days?

I went from Academic science to Management Consulting via brewing so it is doable.

Quite a lot I suppose. Being able to speak to audiences of all ages and sizes.
Being competent on the Microsoft Office package
Being able to create and organise events from scratch
Managing volunteers
Good written and speaking skills
Persuasive

All sorts really.

Parents were teachers. It's a lot of work but I do like the idea of imparting knowledge to the next generation.
It's not really something you can volunteer at for a bit and then decide to take up as a job.

School leavers have most of those skills.

You willing to retrain?

Drug dealer. People and selling skills already sorted, decent wedge to be made.

Ideal skillset for what I mentioned.
