Dear Hivemind of the SMB,

As many of you know, I've been in Fundraising for many a year (15 if you include Uni).
In job terms, it's all I've known.
I've volunteered at a brewery and a radio station and I've worked behind a bar many moons ago.

But I'm starting to feel I need a new challenge. Problem is I have absolutely no idea what to do.
I can't just sack it and look for a job as I have dependants. I need to find something and move into it.
I also don't want to take a massive hit financially - it doesn't make sense to at the moment.

I suppose I have a lot of transferable skills, as they say, but I have no idea what to change them into.

Have you ever had a total career change? What did you go from and start doing?
I could do with some (helpful and sensible) suggestions, please!

If you can convince people to give you money for nothing then you can convince people to pay you for products and services.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Find a sales job that relates to that and you'll love it. The thrill of the chase of a sale is great.

I had a massive career change and now work in software marketing and enjoy it much more than what I used to do.

Worked in a call centre for years, now drive the metro (when it’s working) and enjoy it. 4 day weeks, canny pay and dealing with people on spice is also very enjoyable.

Look at what salary can you afford to drop to, and what the scope of increases are.
eg. Police starting on low £20k's but by the time you hit top end it'll be closer to £40k.

I haven't changed career.

If you can volunteer in a sector in your spare time to give it a whirl, then give it a whirl.
You could potentially be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

I just think I'm losing my passion for fundraising. Even speaking to a lot of lovely young people yesterday about what we do was nice, but I felt I was just parroting it after a while.

Any chance I could get a job in drinking IPA, building LEGO and watching Sunderland or films?

I shouldn't, but

Get a job working for people who sell booze into pubs/chains/clubs.

Decent cash doing that as well.

When I volunteered at the brewery I had a few days holiday to use and they were happy to have me there. I enjoyed it, small brewery mind and I'm not sure I could do that day in day out.
Nice reward mind!

Police isn't something I've previously considered, mainly because I think they do good work but get far too much grief for what they do.

Like you do on here. :D

It was just an easy example of a (likely) drop in salary, yet a (possible) big leap after 7-8 years.

You probably need to invest in yourself to make that change.

What are the transferable skills that would stand out on a CV?

Do a brewing course, set up a market stall selling Lego and ale or something.

You’ll still be rattling a tin at 70 with that attitude.

Sunderland Uni do a brewing course, not cheap though.

What about a regional role doing something else within the charity?

One doesn't rattle a tin, dear sir.
That's not legal.

I'm starting to think about maybe a regional job but I'm sick of my commute now so more travelling doesn't really appeal!

Have you considered going into University fundraising?
I don't know enough about it. If it's tapping up old Alumni for money that doesn't really do it for me

You'd be surprised how thorough and rewarding (both personally and financially) it can be.
