Calling tree fellers ! Update.

The last thing you would do is get network rail to do it. As ever, as soon as a big business is involved everyone's prices go through the roof. Also, when getting prices do not tell them that network rail are involved at all and certainly do not mention their quotation.

I agree about not telling potential quoters any info, let them quote as if they are the only people.

Network Rail are doing it anyway, it's their choice, ( even though old lady ideally wants tree down for own peace of mind), they are calling all the shots and price. From what I understand they are due in next week.

Just been doing some reading on this. Its a bloody nightmare!

Is the line electrified?

Sure NR can't make her do anything.

Making a deal would be my advice - you do it for free and you can remove it - you charge me for it and it stays, would be my advice.

For £40.000 I'd let them stick it up my arse!
That was my first thought.

I would get a solicitor involved.

has she contacted her insurer? Surely this sort of huge expense is why we get our property insured.

A lot. I was quoted 600 quid for a similar job.

I’d rather let the thing come down in heavy wind and claim on the house insurance tbh
Have you got the blokes number? :D

Sounds a lot like Network Rail's problem to me.
This, tell them to fuck off. Add the words ‘Brexit means Brexit’ to emphasise it.

It sounds as if it's a scam.

Network Rail would never ask for that.

We live next to a depot and their team are always chopping/pruning, and they have all the special gear, including track/cranes to do it easily.

It really sounds like she's been approached by some travelling chancers who stick a hi-viz vest on and knock on old ladies' doors.

Did she get a letter, or was she 'approached'?
This

The men were expected, to look at tree, to plan on its removal. But maybe they were just chancing asking for money first, ? I don't know.
Anyway she will wait the written quote.
Put their number up on here

Don’t get a lawyer involved, just tell network rail it’ll have to be done at their expense

End of story

If the blokes come back phone the police

Even assuming it's a huge diseased bastard, the felling should be around 1k. Add £1k for waste disposal/a chipper and another 1k (bit steep but..) for labour, and that's £3k AT THE MOST.

They're trying to scam the old lass out of 50k.
£40 an hour for garden clearance? Can I have a job for £52,000 a year working 5 hours a day for 5 days a week? ;)

Good luck working in the 3 months of solid snow we had last year.

Also you incur costs running a business like that.

I've only had one dealing with "tree surgeons" and what a bunch of chancers they were.
The guy quoted me £800 to remove a small tree. He did the old stick his hand out to try to get me to shake on it before I'd given it any thought tactic. I burst out laughing and he immediately dropped to £400. By then I'd decided this prick wasn't getting my cash and told him to forget it. He than asked me how much did "I want to pay".

I ended up doing it myself. An hours work (plus the hassle of getting shot of it mind)

You've got to be careful, some of them will take the piss.
This sounds like the exact situation I encountered.

Some bloke operating from Peterlee and had all the proper gear but what a chancer.

I had to tell him to get out my house and off my property. Told him to fuck off and never come back in the end.

That's the thing, most gardeners/tree surgeons don't work from Nov-Feb so it's a bit of a bastard. Nice having Xmas off but you have to save for those 3 months off... which is a twat.
