A legend, that I can’t believe is retiring.

I thought he’d just keep on playing and still be excellent at 50.

Hope he is a successful coach. As would love him for England.

Was surprised there wasn’t a thread last night. Didn’t come on to check after seeing the tweets from Marty.

I think some people (inc me) were/are waiting on official confirmation.

And now I can see that the confirmation is there.

Luv Colly me. Always did as an England plays but it's been special these last few years at Durham.

He became captain at a difficult time. The Colonel was having difficulty and Colly who was apparently flirting with going to Derbyshire (I think) took over as Captain. The team immediately went on an unbeaten run and saving themselves from relegation.

Next of course the championship win and the Royal London Cup …

But for me, it always seemed to be that when players dropped out of the England team they either retired or otherwise disappeared from the County scene. Colly didn't, Colly wasn't ready and as it turned out Durham was ready for Colly.

Mr Durham.

What a pro he has been, both on and off the field. He'll be a huge miss, hopefully someone else steps up to try and fill his boots, as he'll be a miss on the field but also off it.

Im sure he'll be going into the coaching side of things at some stage, but he'll enjoy a his spare time playing golf up at Loch Lomond. Hopefully at some stage in the future he'll be back as Durham Coach!

Make him Durham Head Coach now.

He has been a superb cricketer, ambassador and leader for Durham CCC. To come back to Durham when he retired from International Cricket and achieve what he has is nothing short of incredible. Lead from the front.
I’m really disappointed with the stick he has taken from some on this forum this season. At 42 years of age he was obviously going to suffer at some stage. He has always given his best at all times and deserved more respect than he’s been shown this season.

I think he is a great example, to any youngster playing any sport, as to what can be achieved through hard work. I don't think he was born with as much natural ability as many others, but he worked hard at his game and became Englands most reliable test batsman for a spell and our best all round limited overs player for most of his career. Possibly the countries greatest fielder of all time too

I can think of numerous others over the years who had much more natural ability but were unprepared to put the graft in.

I'm sure he will be a huge success as a coach too

Mr Durham.

Exactly it. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

As I alluded to on the Sussex match thread - he owes us nothing. We were a match made in heaven.

Said it before but no north east sportsman has achieved more than Paul Collingwood. HE has delivered for his home county and his country, breaking records all along the way. Shearer had the Angel of the North covered in black and white having achieved nowhere near as much in his respective sport as Paul Collingwood.

He should be a household name in the north east, where nigh on everyone should know who he is. Yet he isnt. Im going to put my foil paranoia hat and say its simply because he isnt black and white or a Tynesider.
