England v India 5th Test

Jennings will not be opening against Australia.

Or Sri Lanka. Or the West Indies.

He's shot. His dismissal today was absolutely abject. If you're getting caught at leg slip trying to work a nurdle of your hips, you need to take a look at yourself.

Poor - and should be the nail in his coffin.

Will have to be two new openers. Burns and who? Reckon they may try Denley - but he doesn't open very often for Kent anymore. Giving Bairstow gloves back rules that experiment out. Gubbins? Would be a real punt with his average at 35 but maybe he has something. Mitchell at Worcester? I'm really not sure who there is, Burns aside.
Forgive my ignorance as I'm only just getting into cricket but why couldn't Baistow be an opener and a wicket keeper?

Same reason you can't easily be a strike bowler and opener. It's a much more physically and mentally demanding job than fielding at deep midwicket.

None, Alec Stewart did it many a time. Iirc Trescothick did as well

As others have said - he'd basically be knackered. As well as the physical demands - crouching for every ball - it's also the most mentally demanding position to field in. Opening batsman is then the most mentally (and technically) demanding place to bat - and it's only a ten minute turn around. It's bad enough in England, but two days in the field in Sri Lanka - you need more than a ten minute break.

Nackered Stewart as a batsman imo. Or at least harmed his potential.

Trying to think of any overseas openers/wicketkeepers?

In recent history Stewart must be the best one that did

That's two/three questions.
Why can't Bairstow be the wicket keeper? A: He can, that's his main role and he's good at it.
Why should Bairstow not be the wicket keeper but Buttler should? A: This is a matter of opinion. Both are wicketkeepers but there's a train of thought that Bairstow should not keep wicket to allow him to concentrate on his batting, that there is more value with Bairstow as a pure batsman and Buttler as a wicket-keeper/batsman than the other way round.
Why can't Bairstow open? Bad idea in my opinion as opening the batting is a specialist batting position and Bairstow's talent is as a middle order batsmen. The issue has arisen because English cricket doesn't seem to be producing many good opening batsmen.
If Bairstow doesn't open then who should? Burns should have batted in this current match.

England have had a poor top order, Cook aside, for many years and relied on the middle order to bail them out. County Cricket is not producing batsmen with the skills to open, Ian Bell was saying yesterday that it's the structure of the season that is the issue.

Same mate, just always read that we need flatter pitches to prepare players for subcontinent

I remember when we won a test against the Aussies and Anderson ran through them, Smoker and co were saying how the fact it was bowler friendly took the shine off the win.

It was a normal English pitch and Root made a 100 on the same day

I'm with you

ali struggling like, still there mind

Only when we're touring the sub continent in the coming winter, when we're going to Oz or the Windies then that changes to quicker pitches. Because it's that easy. :D

I've waited all summer for this but Shami looks leathered there, in the changing room.

Review given not out on the field v cook

Fair delivery

That's a mile high . No edge, ball tracking, Missing. Well done kohli

Shows you why Test Cricket is the best sport for me, Cook free from pressure is playing like he used too and if he wasn't retiring it would be a totally different.
