Another NEPL club on the move??

Called in at phili today an excellent ran club with a good junior set up. They played horden (2nd x1 cricket) another dsl stalwart who had massive success in 90's. Apparently horden had 9 they let best batters bat twice everyone in phili team other than wicketkeeper bowled and still horden all out for 80 ish
Anyone who says Nepl is successful and local league cricket is better needs to read the above again. Poor players being paid at dcl1 and dcl2 level is absolute disgrace and they need to look at themselves and play for love of game rather than money. Have a look at yourselves players in Nepl 2nd teams are better than u so stop taking money out of dcl clubs and stretch ur selves to play at a higher level if u think u r good enough
Rant over but really concerned about ne cricket at moment

Philli 2s are one of the strongest secind strings Ive seen
Think they’ve won league last 2 years

Strongest 2nds u have seen in last few years surely. U must have seen better sides 15 year ago. All relative I guess but for horden to have 9 men, game over at 4 and Phili tried best to help them and make it a game as well is a sad indictment. But to some if cls (a poor team 20 year ago but in a good location to make money) and south north are strong then everything is rosy!!!

Horden 2nds are bottom by a long way, not a true reflection on that league I'd reckon.

A few of my mates and I have recently discussed standards in the DCL 2nds, all of us having plied our trades in the 'lower leagues' (playing with mates in the local village). Hilly etc might be able to shed a bit more light on how good it is. I suspect not much better than NEDL/D&DL 1. But we're all a victim of reduced participation.

I played in a phili 2nd team as a boy in 1992, which won dsl and would win dcl1 now (1st team level) we never bowled anyone out for less than 150. Captained the 2nd team to win dsl in 2001 and again no teams had 9 and no teams bowled out for less than 100. I know times have changed, league needs to adjust. Stop teams at lower levels from paying players (particularly poor ones who will move at the drop of a hat) and allow struggling teams to field 1 side, (structure leagues to allow this) this will help more competitive cricket at all levels

Exactly what we've been bashing on about here recently. Stick all 1st and 2nd teams in the same system and the standard will allow even games. It has to happen or even the bigger clubs will suffer.

Some of the better sides e.g. Kimblesworth / Burnhope would be very competitive in the Div 2 of the 2nds league.

To be honest a few of them would give the 1sts in the NEDL a run for their money.

In the 2nds league there are some decent sides, but then there are some very poor sides too - no disrespect. We've not been able to put a regular side each week but we've still finished around 4th.

And I played for Horden 2nd team in 1992 and the results against Philli second team then ,was much the same as today mate:D

To be fair, they came up with the excellent All Stars for 4-8 year olds and most people have welcomed and embraced it. This is certainly a scheme that will improve participation
It’s not about participation at that level though, it’s about whether they are still playing when they are 18, which in the case of my lad appears to be a negative to that. He has been playing since he was 8 but has now basically jacked it in. Finds playing second team on a Saturday boring and has other things to do like watching safc. It’s a bit gutting really considering the time and effort, the county matches etc but he has just lost interest.

When has the drop off at that age never been an issue? Its been the case for years

You discover other pursuits snd they take over

I stopped playing in 97 aged 17. I was 32 before I came back to league cricket. I regret it hugely all those missed seasons, but hey.....beer and birds was a much bigger pull than cricket was at that age

Well yeah that’s a fair point mate, I am certainly not saying the hundred is a good idea far from it.

What I am saying without a shadow of a doubt is something needs to be done to increase participation and needs to be done very quickly imo.

I do think though that if the ECB did. come up with a good idea it would immediately be dismissed by some on here as a bad idea simply because it has come from them!

Well, I’m yet to see a good idea from them - certainly in terms of improving participation.

I challenge you on that point, I think if they deserve credit, they’ll get it. Might be waiting a while to find out though

I don’t think they will get credit from some people on this board if and when they come up with a good idea.

That and the fact too many purists on this board who are closed to anything that changes the game.

All Stars has been very good.

The current ECB of Graves/ Harrison also shouldn't be blamed for what Giles Clarke did. It's like blaming Gordon Brown for Thatcher.

Saying that I agree the Hundred is an awful idea.

Similar to me - One of my biggest regrets now as an old fart is all those missed seasons - the participation thing is clearly nothing new.

It appears that Stockton will leave the league at the end of the 2019 season and have started discussions with the NYSD to enter for 2020.

It used to be 17/18 yo round here in S Yorkshire mate
They now all pack it in at 14
The only ones who carry on into adulthood are those whose Dad's played

Standard practice is 12 months notice or pay a fair wedge to leave immediately

That's what we have at Spennymoor. All the lads under 21, their dads either play, or used to. Makes travel to away games easier mind!
