Was it really a penalty ?

They're human. And frankly, it will always be wildly inconsistent at a world cup because we have to have referees from all over the place, even though half of them have never refereed high level football on any regular basis.

They'd get slammed for being Eurocentric and biased, but frankly the moment Italy didn't qualify, I would have just filled the refereeing ranks with Serie A refs.
Not having this, Referee was totally spineless.

Players ignored him saying to move further back and he jist walked away.

I thought it was Walker raises his arm and swings it backwards
This all day long, anyone else saying different has England specs on but this is the SMB and if it was reversed (ignore other Kane penna claims) they'd be screaming if it was Kane getting blocked off  The Goal Line overhead camera shows Walker hoying his arm out and clearly swinging it fully backwards out behind him. The replays only show the swing but if you watch the play a few seconds before you can see he knew the Tunisia player was looking to attack the ball. Even in his interview the idiot tried to say he put his arm up to shield it (he even puts his arms out in crucifix position) and says this probably isn't a foul in the Premier League .

Thankfully Kane saved Walker's arse and I guess like most players/managers they won't say what they should say. If he'd just put his arm out to his side then maybe he'd get away with it but the fact he swung it backwards then it was a penna. Some of the comments in here make me think of what Bilic said the other night when asked if it was a foul before the Swiss goal and he said if I was Brazil manager then yes it was a foul and if I was Swiss team manager then no it wasn't a foul, to be fair I don't care!

Not for me. The Tunisian lad made no attempt to go for the ball. Keown made me laugh defending the decsion. Imagine his reaction if itvwas given against him when he was playing

He's dreadful mind. Kept saying Henderson should look forward more and banging on about playing through "the compartments." What the fuck?!

Probably not, but...

The ref said it was a penalty. The VAR guys only had to confirm whether there was a clear and obvious mistake by the ref in awarding it. It wasn't "clear and obvious" so the penalty should have stood.
Does that logic count for the piledriver on Kane?

I believe so. After the ref missed it, the behind-the-scenes refs on VAR duty will have looked to see if the ref made a "clear and obvious mistake" in not giving the penalty.

Although it looked like it might have been a penalty, it is possible that in their opinion it wasn't a "clear and obvious" mistake by the ref to not award it. If that was the case, that they thought it wasn't clear and obvious, then if the ref had given the penalty for it, they also wouldn't have overturned that decision; the penalty would have stood.

That said, a few on this thread have said that the ref actually chose not to go to the VAR, or chose not to accept the VAR decision. I didn't think this was an option, but maybe they have more info than me.

I've seen a lot of this WC on American streams, and their commentators all seem very clued up on the actual VAR rules, whereas I caught a little bit of the BBC coverage at half time and full time in the England match - Lineker, Shearer, Rio and I forget who else, possibly Ian Wright? - and it seemed like none of them had bothered to read the rules at all, the way they were talking. Perhaps these "ref said no" people on this thread got their info from there? I don't know, I'm speculating. It is possible they just have extra info that I don't.
