You would think the St Mirren chairman would know if such a clause existed wouldnt you? the quote was..
"According to St.Mirren there has been NO contact from Sunderland to ask for permission to speak to Jack Ross"

This tells me that permission is required..

Who were you wanting to come? I’d be over the moon with an up and coming manager who wants to do well with us for a change. Realise we aren’t an attractive proposition to the usual suspects. And I’m over the moon with that. Need some fresh thinking to change our direction.
