Did you not sit down and look at each club, its traditions, history and how it fits with the community and then identify the one which best fitted your own wants?

It was easy when I was a bairn. Born in Sunderland, you supported us. Born in Newcastle, you supported them. Born somewhere like Shields, you supported whichever team your family did. No questions to ask.

Hopefully our 'P==s Take Captain' Jack Rodwell was watching.

Mr Methven has a lot of contacts in the media and if he is reading this I would say Charlie fill your boots and take Rodwell to the cleaners as what he has done and is doing to our Club is beyond disgusting. The fans will be 110% behind you.

Why do you keep ignoring me saying all clubs are not the same?

What fans want isn't different though, nor is how fans decide who to support.

You proved it by stating you support us cos your folks told you to. Do you actually think most fans sit down and make an educated choice about who they support, based on what each club represents?

I never suggested that fans do as highlighted above, I said that each club has it's own culture and so do each group of fans. Do you really suggest that there is no 'cultural' difference between us and Newcastle? If we accept that the culture is different, it is self evident that we aren't all the same ffs!

Surely it isn't rocket science.

Okay... You now need to point out the cultural differences between our supporters and the Mags (obviously we don't make arses of ourselves as much or fight animals but apart from that).

Or to make it easier. You list what you think Sunderland fans want from their team/club and we will see if it's different to what other clubs fans want.

Basically what is there to "get" about our club to make it work?

The other thing my mother taught me is you cant educate mince. If you cant accept that clubs and fans are different then such is life, I wont press you any further.

And for the fourth time I've said clubs aren't all the same.... Nice of your mam to refer to her son as mince. And mince rhymes with rinse, which is a canny coincidence.

Not all fans of a club are from the clubs area...there is a reason why people are drawn to a club outside their area. I think this is the point of @daveyspants post. It could be just a glory hunt but in the case of a club like Sunderland, there is probably a different reason, whatever that may be...

I'm sure I will be forever in your debt.

Nah, I will do a Short, and wipe the slate clean so you can have a fresh start. No problem.

It is glory hunting, and that's already been said.

For the vast majority of those not from here the reason will be their parents support us.

Nowt to do with different cultures.

Why do you support us?

I was a PL fan first and not really a fan of any club. Watched games in US on Saturday/Sunday mornings before the US sports would come on. In the US it’s rare that managers or head coaches quit mid season. When Keane quit and Sunderland were struggling to stay up, I started pulling for them to stay up. After the season, I was all over the internet trying to find any info I could about SAFC. A fan was born.

Fair points marra. I guess I was more thinking those living here, who can attend games every week etc. and have been brought up by football supporting parents.

Every football fan wants to see winning football with lots of goals, but that doesn't define their culture. A football club can't choose it's culture, but the culture of a football club is merely a sum of all of the choices of those involved with it.

In my opinion the culture of Sunderland AFC is one of fierce passion. We made choices to spend ridiculous amounts of time and money watching rubbish teams. We made choices that made the club (because of it's fans) the envy of most other clubs. We made choices that turned our stadium into an intimidating place for anyone to play football. We made choices to adore and idolise our players. We made choices to follow our team unwaveringly through thin and thinner, with the odd sparkle of light thrown in. We made choices that meant that I have never come across a knowledgeable football fan who does not have immense respect for Sunderland's fans. In short we made choices that ultimately created our culture of passion.

Over the past few years we've been busy making different choices which are changing that culture, changing it very close to one of apathy. An example: 20 years ago we were relegated from the Premier League and in the following season we lost an away game to Reading to put us closer to the bottom of the table than the top - there was almost a riot. Last season we were relegated from the Premier League and in the following season we lost a home game to Burton Albion which relegated us again - everyone got up off their seats and went home. Our culture is changing, and if we don't start making different choices again, then it will be lost forever.
