It's finally happened! Bernard Tomic has just won three matches in a row on clay for the first time in his career!

oh and Nadal's lost a set on clay for the first time in a while.

Never really rated Thiem much, he always seems to just smash the ball as hard as possible and hope for the best, looked impressive today though, mabye the men’s French open might just be a bit interesting after all.

His record on clay is particularly impressive though. Back to back RG semi finals. Madrid semi final now and a final last year, Rome SF last year and QF the year before, recent Monte Carlo QF etc. He deserves credit for those type of results and clearly isn't a fluke. He's like the ATPs Kiki Bertens who is exactly the same. Just wish he was more competent on hard.

But it is great for the French Open. There may be differences with altitude in Madrid and how the ball plays and it's not one of his best clay tournaments, but it does make the FO more interesting. Nadal may well still win it without dropping a set but he looked beatable today and that should at least give his opponents some hope, rather than going into it with 60 odd sets in a row.

Edmund serving to take the first set into a tie beak here.

Which he fails to do and young Shapo takes it 7-5.

He’s clearly talented, just always reminds me of a Tsonga type who just jumps around smashing the ball all over the place without ever winning anything meaningful, still fancy Nadal to win it but might not be the walkover it looked like it was going to be.

Brilliant that. Great to see him get pissed off and not just shrug his shoulders, not say owt and just smack the ball aimlessly on the next few points like he used to. Other than once or twice this year his attitude seems a thousand times better.

He'll win this now.

Or maybe not...

Not to be for Edmund. Loses the decider 6-4, the only break coming at 1-1. Shapovalov is one of the best prospects on the tour and IMO one of the most exciting to watch, so if Kyle was going to lose, then Denis would be one of those opponents where I wouldn't be too bothered. I know there is more opportunity to go on runs these days, but reaching 2 Masters 1000 semi finals a month after your 19th birthday is pretty good going and it's on his worst surface as well.

Still a good week for Kyle though with 2 notable wins and continues to climb the rankings.

It's been a decent week for the British women on the ITF scene - Katie Boulter has reached a $60k final in Japan (to be played in the early hours), she beat Broady in the quarters; Katy Dunne also lost in the quarters there. Harriet Dart reached a $60k semi final in China (where she lost in 3 overnight) and Katie Swan has made a $25k final in Spain, to be played this afternoon.

It's going to be very interesting for when it comes to the Wimbledon wildcard picks - I can't remember the last time there were so many home players ranked from 120-250 and in genuine contention, rather than some getting one for the sake of it. Most are 21 and under which obviously bodes well.

I wonder if Zverev vs Shapovalov is the next big rivalry?

Hopefully (as I like both). 2nd Masters 1000 semi final meeting and they've just turned 21 and 19 last month respectively. Zverev won in 2 tight sets in Canada last year.

It was quite close until Zverev got the first break and then he ran away with it. Should be an interesting final with Thiem though.

I didn't see it as I was watching the playoff match, but it does look comprehensive, especially as it was done inside the hour.

I will watch the final tomorrow though as that does look a real 50/50. Zverev is really good, his BO3 record speaks for itself and he is on a cracking run of form.He just needs that elusive deep run in a slam (even if 'just' a semi final) and hopefully that comes within the next few months.
