I think this is a horrible bastardisation of cricket but equally I think that the 'new ECB' will market it well and generate a lot of interest in the game.

Just like they did with the T20 Blast, making it the envy of cricket fans across the glo...... oh shit no wait, they made a complete balls of it didn't they?

I deliberately said new ECB though.

The Giles Clarke one shrank the game as the short term pursuit of money was all it cared about. This one is more interested in the grass roots and getting it on TV screens, they're just going about it in a dodgy way imo.

The new fans will be real though.

There's a group of people on here that think that cos T20 crowds have recently increased from two men and a dog to three men and a dog it's a booming tournament, when it isn't.

I disagree with analogy of three men and a dog.

Plenty of kids get to Durham T20 games and have a great time.

These franchise efforts will deprive those very same kids of getting up close to their potential heroes, unless the can attend at the 8 selected grounds.

I'm all for new games, formats and TV coverage but why is the whole country not being given a chance to promote this?

Eventually it will lead to the eight chosen franchises and the counties therein, will get every decent player going to them.

How is that promoting the spread of the game in all its formats?

How can a kid in Sunderland, Newcastle etc see their cricket heroes live?

You have a lot more faith than me then, IMO "this version" of the ECB is second only to FIFA in terms of overt corruption. This competition is a power grab by the ECB from the Counties, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it will cause long lasting divisions and Durham will be one of the primary victims.

Already happening with the departures of coughlin and Jennings to counties included in the franchise format.

It will only increase once it gets started.

They are going to bigger clubs, the fact they're getting a franchise in 2020 had nowt to do with it.

And I get your point about shrinking the geography of the game but outside of the few hundred kids who go to the Riverside hardly any have cricketing heroes or interest anyway so it's a moot point. Kids can still fall for the game by watching on Telly rather than in person.

If the ECB had carried on its previous course there wouldn't be enough interest in the game to sustain 18 full-time squads in a generation's time anyway.

The problem is though, if the kids, parents who watch the free to air stuff, then want to experience the game live, it will be out of reach, for huge swathes of the country.

I'm totally against this clear power grab by the eight county/franchises,whilst the rest will get ZERO free to air coverage and all that comes with that.

They are attempting to turn cricket in this country to the format in Australia, with their six states and franchises

Or the 20k that goes to Taunton? Or Essex? Or Kent? They get big crowds. I think Durham get around 5k or so.

Absolutely. It is exactly what Graves wants. The shithouse.

They do get big crowds at Taunton and Essex for T20 and it's more of a shame for them than us that this Franchise sh1te won't be seen there. Our T20 crowds are poor. I get the impression a lot of the old folk who go to the CC games dont attend T20 at The Riverside.

I personally don't think the format is a great idea.

But rightly or wrongly this is about bringing new fans to the game.

Thats the bigger picture, not what happens to Durham!!

So new fans welcome but current fans fuck off. They've done a number on you chief and I hope for the good of the game your opinion is a tiny minority.

Rightly or wrongly (and by that I mean wrongly) this is about taking the domestic game away from the Counties and into the hands of the ECB, and lining a lot of pockets on the way. That's the bigger picture, and if Durham, Somerset, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Kent, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire, Gloucsetershire, Sussex and Essex could kindly shut up (or even better just fold completely), then that would be great.

That's just way over the top imo, it is clear as day cricket in this country needs new fans, with all the other distractions going on.

Current fans could try and embrace any new ideas if they have the longevity of the game at heart.

Although we agree this particular idea is not the best, let's be honest certain people on this board would be lining up to put a negative spin on whatever idea the ECB came up with to promote the game more in this country, even if it was a good idea!!!

It really isn't over the top.

Think about the catchment area of 18 teams, most areas of the country are covered in terms of people having a local team. With 8 franchises it simply means that more people are isolated without a team to properly follow.

You said it, "it's not about what happens to Durham". Well yes it is, it's very much about the 'have nots' in this. It's very much about the Counties who are being thrown on the scrapheap.

Plus, I think you argument about embracing this bullshit for the "longevity" of the game is exactly that: Bullshit. This is exactly the opposite, it's the shortest of short term thinking to get some snouts in the trough.

I'm a member at Lancs and they are laughing their nuts off. They are going to be handed their future on a plate, it's a huge opportunity to pick over the carcass of Counties like Derbyshire just down the road. And if you think they are bothered about picking the youth players or encouraging anyone to take up the game then you have no clue what is happening. The club shop would rather sell you a branded mini bat that one of the mercenaries can sign for you (at a price, obvs) than an actual bat.

It's absolutely filthy from an utterly corrupt governing body. And it's so blatant and brazen it makes my stomach turn.

Maybe the entertaining, high quality cricket might bring more people game to watch the game, just a thought!!

Guess that's the idea!!.

Maybe the games might be full like your Taunton etc.

We started T20 yet have been overtaken big style by the IPL and the Big Bash, cricket needs to do something to get fans into the game.

Maybe the current T20 competition could be revamped, and can certainly see some people's point of view about the franchise idea and have already said it's not the best.

What is clear is some cricket fans need to get their head out of their arses and realise cricket in this country needs promoting big style and fans want to watch short format on a sunny summer night.

Some people nearly have a heart attack because cricketers wear coloured clothing that's how far they behind the times!

At least the ECB are trying to do something about it!!

When it starts on free to air TV and young kids in certain areas watch the show and say to their parents can we go to see a game, whole areas of the country, won't have a franchise and that will stop them being inspired to play the game.

I thought we wanted to get kids more active, playing sport, instead we appear to be encouraging them to sit and watch this in the house, at the peak of summer, instead of the fresh air.

If the FTECB was truly wanting to attract crowds, why not play this format at the 18 county grounds?

The franchises will have their T20, whilst the other counties will be sitting in changing rooms, with blazing sunshine and no cricket will be played

I'm all for different formats but why is it being targeted at the few instead of the all?

You know what would double crowds?

ENGLAND PLAYERS PARTICIPATING.

Stokes sitting in a Comms box whilst Durham are playing is in no way promotion of the game, to a potential new audience.

Him blasting fours and sixes, fielding and bowling does
