Although I am with you that in general Ashley's ambition has been largely survival in the prem.
He definitely showed ambition in both championship seasons. The first season he retained some big players and gave a decent budget for promotion, second season in the Championship he gave a very good budget.

Now I know why he done this, its because the prem is a cash cow and to be out of it would be very costly for him. So it was self preservation.
Short on the other hand this season has been a disgrace to be perfectly honest.

The reason I can’t stand him as he’s run away this season. Up till this season I totally empathised with him.

Ashley has done a cracking job with you lot - he may be someone you don’t like, but he’s got you financially secure, he got Benitez to stay when you went to the championship and he supported him that year.

Benitez would be a good fit for Arsenal imo. There's not really any clamour there any more to play "good football", they just want to compete again among the big boys. Benitez would do better than Wenger, I'm almost certain than that.

Not even the biggest Short critic would deny he has shown ambition whilst the biggest Ashley defender / fan wouldn’t claim him to be ambitious.

In my opinion there’s a big difference between an ambitious owner and a financially astute one.

Good and honest post.

For me, and call me old fashioned, is that I hate the attitude of just spending as little as you can to survive.
Supporters deserve a bit of effort and seeing a team and manager doing what they can to win. It’s what it’s all about to me.
My biggest gripe was the total dismissal of attempting to win a cup. The whole ethos of sacrificing an attempt to win something in order to survive in the premier league.
Your cup final against Man City, ours in the 90’s are or should be the most important as supporters. Great days / nights and a bit of belief. We didn’t win but we tried. Ashley has never tried and that for me is unforgivable.

Wether it’s the champions league or Northern league, I want to take my kids to watch a team who attempts to win things, not to watch a team that is happy to break even financially.

If you want contrast NUFCs spend over the past few years you need to raise the bar a bit higher than Sunderland.

Try comparing with similar sizes / similarly ambitious clubs in the PL - eg: Everton, West Ham, or even Palace - you will find our spend to be well below theirs.

That is because FMA spends the minimum that he thinks he needs kee us in the PL, whereas those other clubs have ambition for something better
 
Fukin hell just came on here on the last two pages and all I can see is comments from foreign visitors, well owt but Sunderland fans. Are we the Elite football website of the country and fans need to be able to say, "look I've been on the SMB".
