of course not. and rightly so the local community have removed them. the council should have waded in and removed them instantly.

take them down and return the stuff to the travllers camp if not wanting to be too insensitive.

I'd liek to think the police could go round and have a friendly word along the lines of "any intimidation to the elderly couple in any way shape or form or shoudl anythign happen to them. then we are going to come round here and nail all your bits to a load of old pallets"

Absolutely this. I didn't know the bloke, thankfully, but I can definitely judge him. Anyone who terrorises old people, robbing them of their few possessions whilst wielding a screwdriver and who sends their mate up to similarly intimidate their defenceless wife is instantly removed from the "heart of gold" bracket and placed in the "utter cunt" one. He's a twat who will have caused a hell of a lot of grief for a hell of a lot of people and I'm glad that in his final moments he'll have realised that his decision to be an utter bastard has led to him bleeding out on the floor. Fuck him.
