County Championship 2018

Looks like my next contract is going to be in Darlington so all things being equal I'll be able to watch the side much more this year. Will go down and get our memberships next week sometime.

The week is upon us, yet I've still not seen a decent preview article anywhere or heard anything on radio or podcast. I hate the fact that county cricket seems to go so unnoticed in the mainstream, despite the fact that clearly millions will tune in to the commentary later this week - even if there aren't thousands at the grounds.

But, without further ado, the fixtures:

Division One

Hampshite v Worcestershire
Lancashire v Nottinghamshire
Yorkshire v Essex

Division Two

Kent v Gloucestershire
Middlesex v Northamptonshire
Warwickshire v Sussex

Hopefully Worcestershire can do the business, they'll be glad their opener is away for sure. Would like to see Northants turn Middlesex over too. Aside from that, I'm not arsed, it seems a lot of people are tipping Lancashire for success but a lot rests on one-season wonders Jennings & Hameed and the form and fitness of an ageing Graham Onions.

Once again I doubt Yorkshire will be too far away and Nottinghamshire have the tools to be a threat. I don't think Essex will do as well again and I might even be so bold as to say they'll go down.

Not sure how in depth it is but The Analyst podcast have done a county preview that came out yesterday.

Looks like Yorks have lost Plunkett and Willey as late replacements to the IPL which will impact on the CC Champo team, how much depends on how many games are lost to the weather I suppose.

Martin Moxon is spitting about it and has arranged a meeting of the Counties - one option will be a cut off date in contracts after which players can't disappear off to the IPL.

I don't expect or want any sympathy since Willey only came for the money and has only played a handful of FC matches for us. Plunkett's body can't take more than two Championship matches in a row either.

Willey would probably be more in CC plans now that Side'rse has retired but players are hardly likely to agree to contracts with clauses preventing them playing IPL. There's a meeting today of county chiefs called by Moxon to discuss a transfer-fees, conference type CC and compensation to counties for players competing in other countries domestic T20's. Apparently IPL already pay compensation.

Yes they do.

Why would players not agree to a contract like that. All contracts include limits and if a player refused a c0ounty contract they'd need to be pretty confident they will be able to get a gig in several T20 comps - very few English players can do that.

We're only talking about a few players. T20's tournaments abound across the test playing nations. You'd only have to play in 2 or 3 to match your County salary yet still be available for the IPL auction.

True. But how are you going to get those gigs without having a 'reputation' which you can only get by playing for a County and probably being picked for England.

Yes, clearly you have to be an established player before you can pick and choose on contracts. The contract situation is coming to a head which is why Moxon has called a meeting of the Counties. Clearly FTECB aren't prepared to take the lead on this.

Yea, that's a good point I didn't pick up on.

I've listened to it mate, it's absolutely shite. Spent most of their time prattling on about preperation in Simon Hughes' day and f***ing women's cricket.

Don't bother.

Morne Morkel signed for Surrey, 2 year kolpak deal.

Blokes played absolutely tons for SA, makes an absolute mockery of County Cricket that.
