Played with Paul thirwell for Cleveland hall. He was turned to Newcastle for a season, begged us not to tell his family.

I remember playing at Uni and there was a bloke on the other team who played 8 games for Burnley before getting released. This was when Burnley were one of the weakest teams in the Fourth Division. I thought he couldn't be very good. Jesus, he was light years ahead of anyone else on the pitch.

Still makes me laugh when people look at professionals now and say 'I could do better than that'.

This.

I’ve played with academy lads growing up and although they never made it pro, they were miles ahead of anyone else on the pitch.

Luckily I played on the same team as them

Clive Mendonca, built like a brick shit house at 15.

Also slightly off tack but Guy Whittingham was one of the PTI’s when I was in my army trade training.

Not sure that applied back then. I played with and against loads of lads, in the Russel Foster, who were with clubs. The standard of the Russel Foster back then was very, very high.

This could be true as I was playing left back once for Marsden up against a young un apparently on Chelseas books. Tore me a new one the speedy bugger.

I went to school with Jordan Pickford. Was actually quite a good defender as well as keeper, strong, tall, could read the game and headed it well.

Obviously chose goalkeeping and by 15/16 you could see he was way above average for his age, went from strength to strength since then/

Played against Mickey Carroll who was one of only 2 Englishmen to play in the 85/86 European Cup competition.

When I was playing in the Russel Foster there were lads at Sunderland, Newcastle, Chelsea, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, Hartlepool, Darlington, Derby.

Never knew of anyone being stopped from playing only when the actual club had a game.

That rule re Russell Foster only came in 3-4 seasons ago. It should have been applied for years but was over looked.

Steve Howey at St Aidan's. He was a beanpole striker, decent but I was surprised when he broke into the professional ranks.

I was in the same class as Jimmy Montys son, he was as disinclined to sports as anyone you could meet. Good at art though.

Paul Gascoigne and Neil Aspin.
Heathfield playground, Low Fell with green Slazenger tennis ball.
When it came to heading and dribbling, Ale taster taught them all they knew.
Absolutely hopeless both of them

David "don't lose it in the corner" corner at lambton street along with Gary porter aged 13
Porter was quick and strong for a little lad
Corner was corner
