Sure this decision was made after some hard felt discussion

Sad day for local cricket to see a club with this history go

You never know look at littletown perhaps there could be a way back in the future

It is with immense saddness that this post is being wrote. The club has decided to close with immediate effect in its 150th year. The club would like to sincerely thank the players, members and committee for their services to the club over the years, which has helped create a great atmosphere, a great place to play and fantastic memories both on and off the pitch. We wish all involved the very best in the future and any club who accepts a harbour player is not only gaining a great player but more importantly a geniune and brilliant person. I encourage all juniors to continue playing the game you love as you are the cricketers of tomorrow. Thank you for all your support and all the very best.

With saddens Shaun Hagan on behalf of the committee.

I'm amazed they can't cobble together an XI to turn out in NEDL 2, a few old boys and kids. Surely this is better than folding as once you go, it is almost impossible to return. The NEDL 2 this year, I believe, only has 16 games, so plenty of free weeks where the pressure is off. Get your dad on to them again Rob!

Just cobbling together anybody just to get a team out and then get stuffed every week is not enjoyable at all, especially when you spend most of the day doing it, there is others things to do nowadays and other interests.

I had heard a rumour that there had been some pressure applied to sell the ground a short while back, as I don't think the club own it?

Wonder if that's played a part too.

NEDL 2 won't see any XI Seaham Harbour put out getting thrashed, I'd guess. I managed and I'm hopeless!

East Rainton and Kimmer are usually best teams. Rest are a very gentle standard
I'm really surprised that they can't do a South Hetton - so to speak - and start again.

If you had bothered to talk to the men who prepare the wickets, chase up teams, and make the teas you would know that they do it because they loved
their clubs and they don't give a tinkers cuss whether some kid from another club made the county side. It is these people who were the life blood of clubs who are in decline. You say I am in the minority - the attendances and clubs folding suggests the contrary.
Do you seriously think that attendances dropping are down to the premier league? You believe that attendances would still be how they were in 80s if senior league had reigned supreme? If that’s the case you’re kidding yourself I’m afraid.
I played in the senior league prior to premier for the harbour and at times there was only my old man sat against the side wall with a pint in his hand! I played in the last year of senior league as well and the attendances were again pretty sparse, it’s down to more things to do, a 7 day working week, blokes now spend more time with their families than was once the case, blokes even pack in playing when they have bairns now ffs . Times change sometimes for better sometimes for worse but one thing is for sure the premier league isn’t responsible for any of the issues clubs have found themselves in since its inception.

Them just folding without a fight or trying to getting one or two teams together just seems strange particularly for a club with 150 years history, decent facilities, 4 senior teams last year and a junior setup, there has to be more too it.
I know obviously the timing isn't great but I do believe the DCL would have invited them to join never mind the NEDCL at this late stage. It's completely different to the last few teams who have folded where they have had 1or2 teams with no junior setup. They must also have had comitted people on the comittee to get where they were and yes it'. Hard starting from the bottom but after an initially dip it can also be very exciting.

I can' get my head around it, hopefully they do enter a team in the NEDCL.

Sad to see the harbour go, had a couple of good years there, some good people at the club,
But this is very much a sign of the times, a premier league club folding is ridiculous, this is no offence to the NEDL, but it isn’t as simple as just saying we will drop down to the NEDL 2 with one team and happy days.... there is always a slight snobbery about it, but lads who are playing in a better division will either look at it and say I’m not going to play in that division, or know they can just go to a team in premier league or maybe DCL 1, and still play a standard they think they are good enough to play,
I did hear last year that the harbour really struggled to get a 2nd team out, plus any decent younger players will be away to other clubs, so that probably accounts for the Saturday players, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were struggling for 2nds it means their 3rds either wouldn’t or couldn’t play Saturdays....
They possibly can scrap together a team to join the NEDL 2, But it’ll be absolute clubmen and possibly young lads whom wouldn’t otherwise be ready for adult cricket. Also I’m guessing you’ll find the people who did all the running around either did it for the love of it, or because they enjoyed seeing there club in the top division and we’re proud of it, maybe the hunger for doing all that wouldn’t be as strong if the club had to go down so many leagues....

Very valid point and no offence taken, we know that alot of players do look down on us. The hope is a team can be found of those club men who just don't want to see their club disappear and juniors who can take the chance in adult cricket. It's a sad state when a club goes from running so many teams to none at all. It's a sign of the times unfortunately and the pace of clubs folding in the NE seems to be getting quicker.

I feel for the harbour as a great club with decent club men. Unfortunately the sign of things to come as participation numbers continue to drop and raising funds becomes harder. Clubs with bars are really struggling to make ends meet which in return means less income to run Cricket.

I do think the leagues need to look at a temporary solution as teams dropping out in March doesn’t help anyone. Why not give clubs 12 months breathing space, say automatic relegation, allow them to field 1 team for the season and this gives them time to come up with a plan for the year after. At that point if they can’t get 2 teams they can then go down the a league that allows 1 Saturday team only or hopefully they have managed to secure enough players to only drop 1 league.

At what point will the Durham League make 2nd team games optional?? Seriously needs to be considered otherwise more and more teams may throw the towel in alltogether at short notice in the future.

Let’s hope the harbour enter the NEDCL and save their club

From NEPL

Seaham Harbour Cricket Club has informed the NEPL that it is resigning from the League with immediate effect.
It is always sad to see a Club with a long tradition and history folding, perhaps especially so in this case as this is the 150th anninversary of the Club.
The NEPL is in discussion with the Durham Cricket Board and the Chairs of the Pyramid Management Board have convened a meeting to take place on 22 March to discuss the situation.

Further news on the implications for NEPL fixtures involving Seaham Harbour Cricket Club and other matters will be made as soon as possible.
