So what you're saying is the DSL was a closed shop, an exclusive old boys network completely and utterly petrified of change? No surprise how it ended then, is it?

Clubs who've been around since Jesus was a lad automatically deserve favour over new ambitious clubs do they? Even if they've become completely complacent and let their standards slide - a la Durham City?

Thank fuck the TCCB didn't think that way when Durham were made into a First Class county. Cause in the 20 odd years of our existence we've won the Championship three times. There's other counties been around over a hundred years and never won it.

Is that the same Durham City who won the Senior League many times and provided many of Durham's minor county players- including the captain of the County when they won their first game against a first class county in the Gillette Cup.

.Not a closed shop. Clubs were allowed to join if there was a vacancy and as other posters have already said Durham Academy was accepted although to be truthful I dont think they had much choice with that one. But they protected each others interests which in my opinion was a good thing.

To be fair, the Senior League did open the shop towards the end when they tried to poach half of the County/Coast leagues to start their own 2nd division.

Up until this point, the NEPL's preference was to keep the original pyramid structure in place.

The NEPL had to protect itself as the premier leagues HAVE to allow promotion and relegation to get the funding from the FTECB - the senior leagues actions in not allowing promotion and relegation put that funding at risk so they had to ask.

The senior league basically cut their own throats. But some people just wont have it.

At least now those "fly by night" clubs that have ambition can move upwards instead of just being patted on the head and told you arent welcome in our old boys club. :neutral:

Well they can’t if they cannot muster a Sunday third team have the right sized dressing rooms scoreboards etc etc.

All teams new and old should be able to progress without the need for unnecessary criteria

No they ensured that clubs with proud and illustrious histories were able to survive and compete at the appropriate level.

Been done to death this to be fair. At the end of the day, if the DSL had opened up promotion and relegation at the time it was mooted then there'd have been no need for a Premier League cos the DSL would've remained the top league and all the history and statistics of a league steeped in history would've remained in tact.

They signed their own death warrant by ignoring progress and trying to dictate to the DCB.

Durham City for the record, had only themselves to blame. For too long they ignored their local players in favour of the students who only played ended up playing for part of the season.

On participation . Why can't games start earlier?? Used to bug me waiting around until 1.45 to start a game knowing that it could easily drag on and make it impossible to do anything on the night.. Take the wife/kids out etc.. start at 11.00am (ish) and ensure games finished at a reasonable time and it might get some people back into the game and encourage new players... Mate of mine was dead keen to get into it a few years ago but soon changed his mind when he found out games sometimes go on to 7.30/8.00 ..

Just a thought and sorry if it's already been said but I haven't read the full thread..

I'd rather start and finish earlier, but I think it was revealed that historically games would start on an afternoon to allow those that work Saturday mornings to play. This is still obviously in place now.

One of those things where you're damned if you do and damned if you don't in fairness.

Never thought of that to be honest..

Would that still be as relevant today???

Would imagine years ago when pits/yards were open it would of been necessary .. Not sure if it would be the case so much now.. Still it's something I'd not considered.. Cheers
 
At League meetings, the voice of those that work on a Saturday morning seems to be listened to more than those who would like to be home by 7.00. For the overall participation in the game, this has always seemed wrong to me. I'd bet there are more lads out there who would play if they knew they were getting back in time to fully enjoy their Saturday evening.

Should always be considering Saturday nights when choosing the wife to be honest. Told mine cricket was here before she came along, and will be around long after!! Saturday night is for a few beers talking about a dodgy LBW and the quality of the malt loaf on the tea.

I'm not sure really mate, could maybe have a straw poll on here?

I sometimes work Saturday mornings, but then if it was a choice of work or cricket I know which I'd prefer :cool:

When I’ve heard it discussed the argument against is that clubs would have to cater for lunch and tea - some clubs struggle with just tea.

Don’t know how relevant an argument it is these days, but no doubt those against an 11am start would use it

Under 11s games are also often played on mornings so grounds/ club volunteers are tied up with that.

I do think that bringing the start forward to 1:00 would be better though.
