Vaux Site - Building Work Stops

If you want paying before the 120 days they will pay you, if you pay them a fee for what they class as an early payment. So you have to pay them to pay you, it's almost unbelievable. Some of the small businessees they've screwed over are having to get rid of staff to cover their shortfall. The people at the top of that company are scum who won't give a fuck about anybody but themselves.
Yes, I heard that they introduced this. Thankfully I decided to stop trading with them years ago. I really feel for their employees, as you say its the top brass that has been milking it for years and the employees are left to pick up the pieces.

They also introduced their own agency 'Blue Sky' I think they were called to avoid having to give full time contracts.

The saddest part of this is reading posts on here and on bellendbook is that a lot of locals seem to be revelling in the misfortune of it all. Bizarre
Agree. Some people seem to want the city to fail. They're still living in the old bus station, and crowtree leisure centre days.. Good owl sunlun..

I doubt there are many Sunderland people who want the city to fail, why would they? What has happened is decades of under investment and development has made some folk very cynical, very sceptical and gave them an inbuilt distrust of the council. That's all it is.

Well said marra...

However, be prepared for @Boris Bear to call you a mag!

I wanna be leader, I wanna be leader, I wanna be leader, I wanna be leader.

Erm carillion gone bust.

You be leader, no you be leader, no you be leader no you be leader.

Just an extract there of my up and coming play "MONTY WDSC PYTHON"

True.

The Siglion Board of Directors

John Seager – Chief Executive, Siglion
Irene Lucas – Chief Executive, Sunderland City Council
Melville Speding – Cabinet Secretary, Sunderland City Council
Simon Eastwood – Carillion Developments
Christopher Ives – Carillion Developments
Peter Connolly – igloo Regeneration

Wonder which ones are on the take?

I can't understand why no one within the council hasn't nailed their colours to the mast on being the next leader? Mel seems to be at the fore front giving his thoughts on projects and interviews. Mind only the good stuff, the not so good stuff gets the owld blanket Sunderland council "says".
Tbf I don't mind giving them praise but people have got to remember they only doing their job and what is expected (the reason why they were voted in).

I'm denied access to that.

Maybe at work?

I might be missing something here but why are other contractors paying for the work? Surely they are going to look at the half finished projects, suck their teeth and say “That’s going to cost you...”

It's not my opinion or my thoughts people really are cynical when it comes to sunderland. Talking to friends and relatives, reading the echo and this board among other things makes you realise that.
A lad I'll be drinking with tonight moved out of Sunderland a few years back and hates the council with a vengeance. He's always slating the council, the shopping area and the lack of decent places to eat and drink in the centre. I'm pretty defensive of Sunderland and it's people so we tend to get into arguments when the subject comes up.
He goes to Newcastle and the metro centre a lot, prefers them to anything here. What he doesn't realise is he is part of the problem of why Sunderland isn't one of the better cities in England. I point out that there is a lot of unemployment and low pay in the city which means the council won't take in as much council tax revenue as more affluent areas. That shackles them a lot but he doesn't agree. He's actually a sub contractor on the vaux site, he's working on that new office block, or rather he was. It should be interesting to hear his opinion later tonight.:)

Graham miller, Scottish bloke lives in Washington would be my bet. Good lad, clever and nice to go with it. Bout time washie or coal fields got a leader.

Well it was pointed out that it was a Tory council who were responsible for the town hall fiasco, though as I said I have been unable to confirm this. So it seems that councils of all political stripes are clueless. Therefore I don't see how "people keep voting them in" gets us anywhere.
As George Carlin said "The shit you shuffle around at the top is meaningless"

I think a lot of the vitriol is aimed at the council as they are seen as the most influential in the economical performance of Sunderland. People feel their remit needs to be more than just services I.e collecting bins and keeping the streets clean.
Other authorities are perceived to drive economic progress in a more efficient way.
Until the economic strategy is seen to be improving I think the distrust of the council will continue. Although the formation of siglion is an attempt to redress this perception. It's truly frustrating that carillion's collapse will delay the Vaux site further. This is fact now, how the council and siglion attempt to rectify this problem will be further scrutinised by the electorate

Economic progress is driven by things way above local council level. They just have to do the best they can with the (usually shit) hand they've been dealt.

A lot of criticism is driven by ignorance of not understanding how local government works, and believing certain people (Len) who go looking for stuff, then finding what they want to find.

This isnt directed at anyone on here but a general observation of both here & echo over the years. Look at the amount of people who believe;

The council set rent & rates for city centre shops
Think the council fund the fire & police (because of the precept on the bill)
Think most of the income comes from council tax (not understanding why services drop & tax goes up. Tax accounts for about 15%)
Dont understand exactly what a councillor is, often referring to CEO & directors as councillors then thinking they get paid more than MP's
Durham's council is better cos the Normans built a cathedral or Newcastle's is better cos they got city status during the industrial revolution.
Etc, etc

These are things i've had arguments about over the years, and they still crop up time to time.
