SMB Tennis thread

Just watched the Barty v Dasha match from last night, be amazed if Barty doesn't break the top ten this year. Almost a top five player in all but the rankings IMO. Absolute stinker of a draw in every Slam last year so hopefully now she's a top 16 seed she can make up the points she missed out on last year. Probably my two favourite players to watch in that Sydney final tomorrow morning.

Not a fan of putting tips on here in case other people back them and lose money but in no world should Jared Donaldson be priced up as high as 9/10 against Albert Ramos and I suspect it'll have dropped quite a lot by the time the match starts.

Yeah, her last 3 GS draws in particular have been tough so she'll be glad that she is seeded. That said, there would definitely be easier first round matches for her and it is a bit of a banana skin. As with many ball bashers, Sabalenka is very erratic but you'd imagine most of the points will be on he racquet and if she is on form then while cliched, she can be unplayable even at her age. I have noticed her tournament odds were around 50/1 across the board a few days ago, but a combination of the draw and her heavy loss to Tsurenko (which wasn't great) has seen her odds drift out to generally 100/1 (although still 50s at Hills). I'd expect Barty to win, and she probably will say 3 times out of 4, but there will be many seeds a lot shorter than 1/3 to win their opening matches - Kerber 1/9, Konta 1/7 and then the massive favourites at 1/12 or shorter. Out of the unseeded players, I'd still personally put Sabalenka in with the likes of Bencic, Kanepi and Sharapova as those the seeds would least like to play in the first round. You could probably add Giorgi in there as well as she can be dangerous. Barty vs Sabalenka is definitely one of the opening matches I'm most looking forward to.

What's your thoughts on that young Aussie lad who's just made the final? Cracking few months for him, winning the wild card and then deep runs in 2 tournaments. Do you see massive potential there?

Broady knocked out of qualifying. Think that's just 3 Brits in the main draw now.

Think I'll watch the first set of Edmund. You'd think the 4th matches would still be on when most wake up so that might have been better. Might watch a bit of the Kyrgios match while having brekkie.

What bets you putting on

A few familiar names came through the men's qualifying - Brown, Bemelmans etc, but only 3 of the highest seed in each section made it. Tomic fell at the final hurdle. Polansky and Berrettini qualify as Lucky Losers. Lu and Krajinovic both withdrew.

3 of the 12 top seeded women qualified including Kumkhum, Blinkova and Golubic. Tomova replacing Konjuh as a Lucky Loser.

What bets you putting on

I'll be putting them on this afternoon mate, will post on here. Will put a small acca on everyday for the first week and if one wins, I'll increase the stakes. Will do the odd quarter betting and have an outright winner and an outsider bet.

Prediction time:

Djokovic in the men's

Svitolina in the woman's.

Be a hell of a story if Novak wins mind. Tough draw as well.

You've said Svitolina for a while now and she got a cracking draw. Should really make the quarter finals at least given her section and should be a favourite to get to the semi finals. She deserves a good grand slam run after such a good year on tour last year and already a Premier title in the bag in 2018.

She's in the 'easier' half and has the game to do damage so you never know, but I'd personally have at least 10 who I'd consider more likely to win. Kontaveit has been poor since Wimbledon so there's not too many threats until the last 16 but you never really know what you are going to get with her. I'd like to see her go far but personally don;t see her getting to the quarters.

Just seen that the reigning US Open junior champ who isn't even 16 until the end of June has made it through qualifying

I find the men's and woman's is wide open. I can't see Federer winning the title. Having watched him in the Hopman Cup, I thought he looked like someone in his mid thirties. He struggled against Sugita and Khachanov. Maybe it was lack of matches and being rusty but I do think time has caught up with him.

This season I think David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez will plummet.

Eurosport 1 starts with Anderson-Edmund at 12am, Eurosport 2 with Ostapenko. I assume as it's the Aussie slam, all other courts will be covered on the Eurosport Player, unlike the US Open which had 3/4 non televised courts.

Think il get a choice on William hill they stream them not sure whether to watch Edmond or ostapenko first

5-fold, just over 6/1

Kanepi, Gavrilova, Kumkhum, Vandeweghe. Makarova. £3 on that.

Would normally have added Siniakova at 4/9 but I'd prefer Sakkari to win so kept off that. Also 7/4 on the young Aussie Wild Card Fourlis.

Who you got to win tournament
Took Svitolina @ 15/2, was more before the draw but she is faves with 365. Also had a couple of quid on Kerber vs Svitolina final @22/1. They had a 'who will go furthest' market where they name two players and you pick one but you couldn't do it as a multiple for some reason so wasn't much point.

Aye it's not worth it I don't get why you can do all-sorts of weird combos but not stuff like that.

Only seen him play once and that was a challenger he lost in straight sets so I've got no idea really. Hope he wins on Tuesday though.

Day 2 schedule is out already by the way.
