As the title Sunderland did not have enough players physically or mentally ready for the slog of Championship football at the start of the season.
To even have any hope of competing at the top end of the division will take a major rebuilding job and (on Sunderland's budget) a lot of bargain hunting over a few transfer windows.
Kone, Rodwell, O'Shea, Matthews, Oviedo, Gibson, Ndong, Cattermole and quite a few of the younger players were and are not fit for purpose at this level.
How some Sunderland fans think this squad is anything but relegation fodder is beyond comprehension.
As it was Sunderland appointed the man for the job, a manager with a proven track record of building strong teams on a shoestring budget.
But based on a poor start and a couple of poor signings (always going to happen when signing players on such a budget) chased him out after a few months.
Give Coleman time (2 - 3 seasons) and Sunderland will be back in the premier league.
Chase him out also and years in the doldrums as Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Man City etc await.
