A decent lad I'm sure but not good enough - physically small, wins a ball but is chased down straight away, out of the game for too long. Not that young so unlikely to improve greatly.
Still, think he'll do all right in a lower league. Good luck to him but we need better.

Going off his general game I'm not sure it's work rate, probably more a lack of awareness and ability to react to what's happening. His work rate is good but his football ability, not so much.

Yeah maybe, asking an attacking minded player to do a defensive minded job is asking for trouble but he did play afew games for Moyes CM anarl.
 
4 goals in 27 apps for Sunderland in the PL and Championship, in a horrifically struggling side. He's not great, he's a bit lightweight, but he's doing alright for himself and is a useful, hardworking player who wants to be here, and can and has effected games, assisted and scored goals at PL and Championship level.

But apparently he wasn't Pele reincarnate at Gateshead 2-and-a-half years ago, therefore he must forever be judged on that alone and everything that has happened since must be ignored...

Yes he has scored a couple of goals this season, as it stands now is it 2 or 3 for the season? He has done very little aside from this though, he doesn't really influence games and is a passenger mostly. His main issue is his size, as you need outstanding ability to compensate for being so small, ala Messi, which he doesn't have.

Being in the right place to tap in from 2 yards against Burton doesn't change this, IMO.

I can see why people aren't convinced by him but I think he'll develop if he's properly coached and plays in a settled side.

As for the goal, I'd have to disagree ..... look where he is when Grabban gets the ball and where he is when he scores.

Remember, this is at the end of a very hard fought game and no one would've noticed if he'd stayed where he was.

He'd run from the edge of his own box to be '2 yards out' if you're being fair.

That 'will to win' and determination is exactly what's needed at this stage of our season.

Regardless of ability we're going to need fit and fighting. We've spent millions on players and ended up with little for our money. Let's hope Coleman has the ability to lift players like Honeyman and have them punching above their weight.
 
If he's doing positive things in matches and contributes more than the more established players then clearly on form alone he is good enough to start.

I agree long term I don't think he has it about him to make the progress needed to be a premier league player, but he'll have a career at this level for sure.
 
Honeyman is a victim of the last few seasons. Any goodwill the playing staff have had with the fans has gradually evaporated. I've been going since the late 70's and can't remember a time when there was so little connection, and often pure vitriol between the fans and players.

Honeyman is a trier, yes he's no world beater but look at where we are as a club. On Saturday he did a thing I've not seen previously from a midfielder here all season. He took possession in the centre circle and instead of going back to O'Shea or Browning, he actually turned and took on a couple of opposition players and drove forwards with the ball towards the opponents penalty area. I think the rest of the side were so taken aback by this radical move that nobody offered themselves for a pass and the opportunity was lost.

But for that show of attacking intent and his goals he gets my support.

Not really, his opinion like so many on here is a little ott but he can't hold a regular place down in a side that's been one of Sunderland's worst ever up to now. Hopefully he'll improve along with the team as Coleman's work kicks in but up to now he's been very poor in a very very very shit team

Fair play like, I think that’s just poor positioning/understanding for me like.

I think the one thing you can’t faukt honeyman is his work rate like.

Gives 100% he’s just not good enough

Have you ever played football? If so, surely you must know that "being in the right place to tap in from 2 yards" doesn't just happen. It's certainly more skill and judgement than luck.

Shame we don't have a few more who know to be in the right place from 2 yards.

He is a tidy player, finds a Sunderland player with most of his passes, wriggles his way out of trouble and is quick to turn in the middle of park. He can beat a player (this has dried up as the season has progressed but we know it is there) and he gives his all and is always showing in the middle of the park.

No idea why he seems to be so hated on here, he's a decent player at this level and is definitely good enough for the bench when all are fit.
