We've probably all seen similar in our own working lives. A younger model with talent comes in, recruited by top gaffer, second in command gaffer doesn't like to be outshone or challenged. Prefers to be making the recruiting decision himself so he can pick someone who's OK but not so good that top gaffer starts to doubt second gaffer!
