Karanka

Just been reading he turned down Birmingham because he wasn't convinced by their long term project. I now don't think he will be coming to us.

Karanka would be a good fit for Sunderland in their current position which is similar to where Boro were on the playing front when he joined (though Boro were in a better position off the field than Sunderland currently appear to be).

Karanka signed for Boro for a number of reasons, most linked to Chairman / Owner Steve Gibson as follows;

1. His powers of persuasion.
2. Lifelong passion for his local club.
3. Knowledge of football.
4. Being loyal to his previous Managers.
5. Delivering on his previous playing visions for Boro - signing world class players, winning a major trophy and playing in Europe.
6. His vision for the future at Boro.
7. Transfer funds that would be made available.

I think it's fair to say that if Ellis Short was measured against that checklist there wouldn't be any chance of Karanka joining Sunderland.

As such the question is what would be the attraction for Karanka to join Sunderland especially as he has also publicly stated that he feels he is ready to move UPWARDS to the next stage of his career?

His understandable love of the Teesside area and its people (both well publicised in the past) ironically may go in Sunderland's favour as he could continue to live on Teesside where he is settled and be Sunderland Manager.

It's certainly going to be an interesting week or so.

But Ellis said we're going to be 7th in the PL soon didn't he? Maybe Aitor sees it differently? I just hope we appoint someone sooner rather than later. Whoever comes in needs to get cracking without delay (apologies for stating the bleeding obvious)

Some good points but why should he be moving upwards after only one managerial role, in which he was ultimately sacked?

Given his reputation and experience, the Championship seems to be his level at the moment. I could actually picture him at Leeds.

Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday or Hull. All three managers of those clubs are under pressure & all are within fairly easy reach of Teesside or North Yorkshire or wherever Karanka lives. We'd better get weaving if we want him. Of course, he might be boxing clever, biding his time until he knows all his options. Might not bode well for us, if he's been identified as our top option

The only thing going in our favour is that we are close to his home so he wont have to leave his family. A short term contract with nowt to lose, i think he'd be tempted.
