he turned at boro nov 2013 and got them from 20th up to 12th by season end.
didn't initially spend big. Ayala for 370k.
the next season they ended up 4th, lost playoff final, having bought:
Tomlin 1.7m
kike 2m
clayton 1.7m
wildschut 700k
foreshaw 2m
in 2015/16 they ended up 2nd having bought;
downing 7m (gibson signing that karanka didn't want)
stuani 3.6m
nugent 5m
de pena 2m
rhodes 10.7m
de sart 2.3m
and then more signings made for PL.
certainly early on he seemed to have made some astute signings though later went bomkers with the likes of nugent and rhodes.

He got promoted with those bonkers signings TBF.

He didn’t want Rhodes. It was one of the reason he decided to disappear for a bit
